but, an nbc bay area investigation showed reports of stolen guns are trending up. many are later used to commit more crimes. >> stolen guns are related to high profile crimes here in the bay area. >>> nbc bay area and more than a dozen stations across the country teamed up with a nonprofit journalism organization "the trace," to find out exactly how stolen guns circulate around the u.s. the data we compiled from more than 1,000 law enforcement agencies around the u.s. showed 71,000 guns were reported lost or stolen in california, alone, since 2010. we traced at least 135 of those guns stolen in other states that end up here in california at crime scenes. we found more than a dozen high profile bay area murders in the last five years alone involving one stolen gun. those cases include the case of kate steinle killed on pier 14 two years ago and the shooting deaths of three people at san francisco's u.p.s. warehouse. plus, the shooting death of pete and antonio. >> we find them in the same state or nearby metro area from where they were stolen. >> even so, we found th
