you're looking at nbc bay area sky ranger video showing the whale that washed ashore on brooks island near rimo pacific. nbc bay area's marianne favro live near the whale in richmond. what's going on here? >> well, scientists don't know yet, but they're certainly looking into it, terry. i can tell you the whale that washed up here off richmond is a gray whale and it washed up on the other side of this sandbar. video from our nbc bay area sky ranger shows it washed up on the beach. the marine mammal center first received reports about this whale spotted over the weekend. it appears to have a section of its tail missing. also today, another whale was spotted washed up on the rocks off the coast of pacifica. i just got confirmation that is also a gray whale. that makes found deadnrea waters in just five weeks. i just got off the phone with noaa, and they tell me we are approaching a record number of dead whales this year. with 28 discovered on the west coast. 21 of them here in the waters off california. necropsy found many of these whales are dying from malnutrition. now scientists are

this is at least the fifth shooting on a bay area freeway just thiswh month. nbc bay area's thom jensen is along westbound highway 94 in martinez where the latest shooting happened just before midnight. >> it happened on a wide pullout just like this one on highway 4 westbound between franklin canyon road and mchughin road, just before midnight last night. a spokesman for the chp told nbc bay area that men in a newer -- two men in a newer, small, white car, possibly a toyota corolla, began tailgating a man and woman driving westbound here. he says the couple pulled over to let the suspects get by. but a passenger in the white car started yelling at them, so they pulled all the way off the road into a pullup, possibly this same one, but the suspect's car pulled in front of them and stopped, blocking them, and then a passenger in the car, the one yelling at them, started shooting. he hit the victim's car twice, but fortunately, the man and woman both escaped uninjured. the victim's car, that nissan, as i said, chp said was hit twice. they do not what caliber weapon

. >>> now to a story only on nbc bay area news. the church attended by an army veteran at the center of a hate crime investigation iss speakin out. police say 34-year-old isaiah peoples had just picked up food, was taking it to the bible study group when he plowed into people in a crosswalk and sidewalk. eight people injured, only critically. peoples reportedly did it because he thought they were muslim. the pastor off renewal church said he is shocked and saddened by the crime in a statement reading isaiah peoples first came to our church roughly one year ago. in the time we've known him, he's always been very quiet and gentle. our hearts are broken by all those affected. the sheriff's deputy shot in the hand is back home tonight. the douglas county, nevada, deputy released from the hospital this morning and escorted home and wounded late friday when police closed in on stephon jefferson who allegedly opened fire on them, suspected of killing a man in oakland, a man in san francisco and a third in berkeley before fleeing to nevada

but first nbc bay area working on? breaking news this midday. lines of northbound highway 101 shut down the last couple of hours after a big rig fire north of the golden gate bridge. nbc bay area's bob redell stuck in the traffic backup that's happening there. bob, we're get something reports there of explosions? >> reporter: that backup extends from the bridge a good mile or two north to spencer avenue where a goodwill truck went over an embankment around 8:00 or 8:30 and as you can see in this video posted to twitter caught fire. the driver of the big rig was able to escape his cab unharmed. he grabbed a fire extinguisher but was not able to put out that fire as you can see. the cab burned up. the rest of the truck is fine as far as it was burnt up but it's damaged from the crash. and the driver's okay. chp tells me they believe the driver was speeding when he lost control on these wet roads a little bit after 8:30 this morning. all northbound lanes of 101 were shut down at one point at spencer avenue but now the number one lane, that's the far
