bay area from honolulu here for a tournament at stanford. before the big match they ran into a problem. someone broke into their vans, taking their equipment and much more. nbc bay area anoushah rasta joins us. >> the parking lot behind us is where the university of hawaii official says they parked the team vans on wednesday so the team could grab dinner at a nearby restaurant. someone then broke in, stole backpacks, swimsuits, water goggles, passports of foreign players. a parent of one of the water polo players sent us photos that her daughter took posted on snapchat after the break-in showing the busted vans, broken glass everywhere in the parking lot. today the team faced off against cal at stanford for a tournament. this is video of the university of hawaii players practicing before the game, a game that cal ultimately won. at a short press conference after the match two of the players noted the break-in but told us they didn't let that distract them. a parent who came to watch her daughter play calls the incident really disappointing. >> well, for me it was a big deal because our daughter's car is in hawaii and she had her keys in her backpack. not jus

our nbc bay area sky ranger flying over the big problem. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus wark wash. nbc bay area bob redell is live there on 880. and bob, has the cleanup even started or are they still scattered everywhere? >> reporter: caltrans arrived here in the past 15 to 20 minutes. we're talking about northbound 880 at whipple a couple miles along northbound 880 in union city. you can see traffic is slowing. let me show you some video we shot when we were on the freeway about an hour ago. you can see what we're talking about. there are -- according to chp, they initially said there were millions of these aluminum cans. not quite sure there are that many. there are definitely thousands of these aluminum cans, recycled aluminum cans. they've flattened. we've seen soda cans, beer cans, juice cans strewn throughout the entire freeway. again, northbound 880 from whipple to about two miles north. and that is what is causing this slowdown right now. i wouldn't necessarily say there's a road hazard as much as it's just a curious distractio

north bay couple whose round-trip flight to the philippines nearly left them stranded. >> nbc bay area couple whose round trip flight to the philippines nearly left them stranded. >> it cost a lot more than they budgeted for. they asked our consumer investigator for some help and maybe try to get a refund. that is hard to do with the airlines. >> put yourself in andy gutierrez's shoes. they are overseas in manila, set to fly from manila to taipei and then all the way home to san francisco. but the airline told them they only had a reservation for the second leg from taipei to san francisco. so on the spot the gutierrezes had to book a separate flight from manila to taipei out of pocket and it cost them $380 out of pocket right there on the spot. andy later asked expedia which made the original reservation to pay for the missing flight and he says, well -- >> upon their investigation correct process was followed and they regret to inform me my request for a refund was denied. >> thumbs down. andy contacted us. we contacted expedia. a week later he got his 380 bucks plus a $200 voucher,
