a magical bay area moment quickly turned tragic. nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney was actually at candlestick park that night and joins us now. it's been a longe it just happened yesterday, terry. >> it seems very much like yesterday. you can never forget something like that. we are safer. and you don't have to be an engineer to appreciate that. all you have to do is look around san francisco and the newer, safer structures. they're everywhere. maybe the most prominent change as a result of the loma prieta earthquake is the new eastern span of the bay bridge. it owes much of its existence to the bridge it replaced that partially collapsed 30 years ago tomorrow. san francisco's embarcadero, a wide bike-friendly ble freeway which was torn down after being damaged. its deswhere most of the fatalities occurred. three killed in santa cruz 20 buildings destroyed but quake could not destroy the book store. city officials gave owner neil cunity to grab his books from the condemned building. he put out a call to the community. 400 people responded

nbc bay area's sky ranger flew over those flames this evening as crews continued their round-the-clock battle. nbc bay area's sergie quintana is live in the town of litton, just outh of the coppola winery. sergio. >> reporter: yeah, as you mentioned, the fire does seem to be moving a little bit south and east, and that is the reason why we are having those additional evacuations. let's go ahead and show you right now. we're kind of seeing the edge of the fire here. those additional evacuations issued here in sonoma county, and then just over the hill east of us in lake county are additional evacuation prompting fire crews to close down some of the roads heading into the fire zone. a new evacuation warning has also been issued for cobb mountain and surrounding areas in lake county including the communities of gifford springs, cobb, whispering springs, anderson springs, adam springs, and hobert. >> it's just hard for the area. we're still trying to recoup from a couple years ago. >> in sonoma county residents in litton have been stopping along the roads to watch as the hills are lit up.

nbc bay area responds next. >>> this is a crazy one. nbc bay area responds.rancisco man whose beloved pickup end-up at the bottom of a makeclt right. chris. >> let's take a look at dennis share don's 1997 dodge da tokaea pickup. this is a close-up of the hood. that is the radiator right there. look how it is bent. that is not normal wear and tear. dennis says a caltrans tow truck driver accidentally dropped that truck down an embankment near the bay bridge on the oakland side. this is what happened and this is the estimate he got for repair. more than $6,000. but when he filed a claim with caltrans, dennis says he got no response. that's when dennis turned to us. we asked caltrans what happened. a spokesperson didn't give us an answer. he later got a check for $2,264.31. that is a lot less than $6,000 that we saw on the repair estimate. but dennis accepted it and says he is ready to move on. why the low amount? depreciation. insurance payouts are typically based on your car's current value. even though dennis took great care of his truck, it was still 22 year
