nbc bay area watched it all unfold. talk to us about what you saw and how this played out. >> good morning, marcus. we were just finishing up our last hit earlier this morning around a couple minutes to 7:00 when we saw traffic starting to slow. that is the same time chp says they began receiving calls that there were cars on the northbound lane of the golden gate bridge slowing down traffic about 15 minutes later the southbound lane was stopped because of that protest that was happening at the front of the golden gate bridge on the san francisco side. now, several pro immigration groups frustrated with the status quo drove to the bridge and stopped there with hopes the move would gain the attention of lawmakers. a spokesperson for one of the groups behind the protest called human agenda says he apologizes for the backup but the event may have caused but says the group is dmaning democrats override the senate parliamentarian who excluded immigration provisions like a pathway to legalization for millions from that $3.5 t

terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >> well, some business owners in the east bay are pushing back againsta costa county's new indoor vaccine mandate. now, required to ask customers for proof that they have been vaccinated or recently tested and once inside, you have to wear the mask. today, the chamber of commerce hosted a q&a with the county health officer. one store owner said the mandate feels like a punishment. >> also, getting into, you know, the -- the fall and winter holiday season. we did see, you know, last fall, the cases started going up after halloween. um, and then they really shot up after thanksgiving and christmas. um, so we really want to get our cases down. >> now, the doctor says too many school kids are contracting covid and hospital beds are just too full. once children, especially young adults, are vaccinated, he says that mandate could be lowered. >>> we are back in 60 seconds. ahead, he risked his life to save someone else's. >> what was going through my mind was just i need to get him out as soon as, like now. faster, the better because i think it was just seconds

nbc bay area news. >>> vax before you can go to class. two of the bay area's largest school districts are considering a student vaccine mandate. west contra costa unified says it is still examining the issue but has not yet set a date to vote on it. oakland unified says they could bring it up for a vote as soon as next week. >> we believe what will make stoogts safe seventh if all students 12 and up are vaccinated. >> reporter: so if passed, the district would require vaccines for any student 12 and older, staff and teachers would have to be fully vaccinated. the consequences for not getting vaccinated are still being discussed. >>> city leaders on the peninsula have shot down a plan that would have required prof of vaccination to eat outdoors. the mandate proposed to the milbrae city council would require prefecture of vaccination -- prefecture of vaccination for indoors and outdoors restaurant. city council wanted to support businesses by not adding restrictions. others say they have concerns that it would have been unconstitutional. >>>

this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. this all started two years ago by a retired sheriff's sergeant in yolo county, he didn't like the way governor newsom was doing his job leading the state, so he started the recall. 1.5 million signatures later, verified signatures, this is where we are. tonight with the polls closing in about an hour from now and the governor fighting to keep his job. as long as you're in line by 8:00 p.m., your vote will be counted. no reports of long lines here in the bay area, but take a look. this is down south, the polling place in huntington beach, the line out the door and literally around the block. here in the bay area, this is a look at the library in san jose. no lines, pretty quiet. a slow and steady stream of people dropping off their ballots. as for the candidates, governor newsom making a last-minute appearance here at home in san francisco. this was at the union hall. he thanked supporters and urged them just to get out and vote. he then spoke one on one with nbc news. ? >> this is a s

live in south lake tahoe, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >> thom, thank you. you can see thom there in smoky south lake tahoe. rob, every seems bittersweet. the smoke now here in the bay area. what's happening? >> we're seeing a combination of smoke problems ongoing. i'm glad thom jensen is wearing his n95 mask. those smoke levels around south lake tahoe are off the charts. as the firefighters pointed out, a lot less fire activity around lake tahoe. the active areas are these little red dots. there weren't a lot of those in the last 24 hours. most of those actually burning away from south lake tahoe. let's take a look at that smoke pollution level, which around south lake tahoe level was an aqi index of 700. to give you an idea, spare the air is down there, and this is where tahoe has been for the last two weeks. and more of this is going to be ongoing over the tahoe basin next couple of days, kind of in and out of that wildfire smoke at times. back to the bay area, you're seeing some unhealthy air around marin county. moderate air quality elsewhere. we'll have

nbc bay area's bob redell has more on the progress on the front lines. >> reporter: the bay area air quality management district has extended the spare the air day alert for today monday as well for a few reasons. one, the temps are going to be up there today. you've got car pollution, more people are venturing out as they get more comfortable getting back into their pre-covid routines. and also you're going to have some smoke from the wildfires, especially the caldor wildfire. cal fire has achieved 44% containment on that fire which has burned over 215,000 acres. the winds have let up, and they've made it easier for firefighters to up that containment. authorities started letting people back into south lake tahoe on sunday. 22,000 people roughly were forced to evacuate last week. >> we were happy. at the same time i'm sad because many people lose everything in the fire. >> reporter: even though the authorities are allowing residents back into south lake tahoe, an evacuation warning is still in effect for that area because there is still concern. it's just a warning, it's no longer m

let's head out to nbc bay area's bob redell. he's been live all morning long at a polling station in dublin. how has turnout been, bob? >> reporter: so far about 120 people have showed up to this polling site in dublin. there has been a slow trickle of people showing up to this poll since it opened at 7:00 this morning. of course, this is part of alameda county. certainly not the kind of turnout you'd see in a general election. we do know that the republicans are relying on a heavy turnout today in person in order to counter the mail-in ballots that so far lean heavily democrat, but we don't know if the turnout today will be enough for them to win this recall effort and get governor newsom out of the job. >> why is this important for you? >> i think i'm looking at it. so it depends on our future. i'm really nervous about the election, and i've seen what happened in georgia and texas, and i don't want that to happen in california. >> i think everybody has to participate. you know, we only get what we give in. and we've got to at
