tapping into one of our local psychiatrists from sam ford with some answers. >>> welcome back to nbc bay area news tonight. it's one of the bay area's only remaining roller rinks, and it's now closed indefinitely because of flooding. antioch's paradise skate is under several inches of water. let's bring in jodi hernandez inside the ring. >> reporter: i'm at paradise skate in antioch, where folks are on flood watch once again. the doors have been sealed with foam, as the rain falls outside. a couple of weeks ago, this place was hit hard by the flood waters, about 6 inches of water made it into the roller rink, covering the carpet and ruining the maple wood floors, about 9,000 square feet. i'm going to show you -- it's hard to see with the naked eye, but we're going to show you how warped the floor is from that flood. this is supposed to be smooth and flat. not the case right now. you can see they've got the mop vaks out, the fans out. it's going to cost about $400,000 to repair this roller rink. but the owner is determined to fix it because hundreds of kids rely on the rink for entertainment.

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is tracking conditions in the north bay, one of the places getting hit the hardest. and we want to hear from meteorologist kari hall, who has been tracking this weather. >> we've been seeing the rain widespread and steady for much of the bay area. we've seen at times pockets of heavier rain picking up and moving into parts of the north bay from marin county right across the richmond-san rafael bridge. for the east bay, it is widespread with a few areas where you see the darker green, the heavier rain that's moving through. and we're definitely seeing that now over the santa cruz mountains, reaching more saratoga and eventually making it toward san jose, with lighter showers for morgan hill to gilroy. so we are still looking at waves of rain coming in, all of this moisture pushing across the bay area, and at times it does pick up quite a bit as it taps into that deep tropical moisture. another atmospheric river moving in with bay area rain and sierra snow that's really reducing the visibility in those areas. all of this drawn in by the center of this storm, t

nbc bay area's pete suratos is near the scene with more reaction from the community. first, let's turn to nbc bay area's bob redell about the news conference this morning. what's the latest from investigators, bob? >> reporter: this morning the san mateo county sheriff said the suspect knew the people he allegedly shot and killed, and without going into details, says this points to an instance of workplace violence. the sheriff says the suspect, 66-year-old chin chunli zhao, purchased the semiautomatic gun he used to shoot eight people yesterday at the mountain mushroom farm where zhou worked. all were adults of asian or hispanic origin. seven of them, including one woman, died from their wounds and another man is out of surgery and stable. the sheriff's office says that he drove his car to the substation after the shooting, a deputy recognized his vehicle based on the description that was sent out earlier. he had the seat back and was lying in the front seat. he did not actively surrender. he had to be ordered out of his car at gunpoint. the sheriff's office says he i

nbc bay area news. >> a lot of work ahead for all those crews. thank you. >>> something we haven't seen for years is probably some excitement and a little worry. south bay reservoirs are spilling over from the constant rain and run-off. robert handa joins us from near los gatos. crowds have been gathering all day to see the water flow. >> reporter: that's true. people have been gathering and the water is certainly flowing. behind me is what people have been coming to look at. it was a little easier to see and might have been surging a bit more earlier today. but the lexington reservoir began spilling over today. the water system knew this was coming and cleared room on sunday. the water district is releasing about 3,200 gallons a second at this reservoir. enough to prevent overflow here and on the los gatos trail. the spillway is just as impressive here. it has been spilling over for days. people who came out to watch the water say the scenic spillway is a bitter sweet experience. >> a lot of our neighbors had to be evacuated this past week. it ha

his nbc bay area stephanie -- >> reporter: destruction and damage can be spotted across the bay area during tuesday's clear skies. crews spent hours clearing several landslides in the east bay that forced families out of their homes. many of them now fear an even worse scenario with even more rain in the forecast. >> hang on, we are not clear yet. >> reporter: in the south bay hammers are moving fast as roofers scrambled to permanently cover leaks. and others like antonio medina are dealing with this. piles and piles of tree branches over his property after he says pg&e crews came in to fix this powerline. so basically he is saying that because his dove inside was damaged this was a makeshift kitchen and you can see it's now just covered in tree branches. inside his wife's work shed he says the roof is damaged after pg&e left and he spent over $300 to fix it and hire help. now he's trying to figure out how to deal with the branch problem. in a statement and on their website pg&e said they don't have the authority to move wood or trees from your property but they will cut them in smal

that's where we find nbc bay area's robert handa. you've been all over the city today talking to people bracing for the storm. i understand you're at one of the trouble spots, fulsome street near 17th. what's the latest out there? >> reporter: you're right. this is a neighborhood that has taken the brunt of these storms. you can take a look and see what it looks like right now. a lot of hard rain and wind combined. the reason is that fulsome street and 17th is essentially the flat area where all the adjoining streets funnel the water. it's not only the rain hitting the neighborhood hard today, but also accumulating very fast. in fact, take a look at this home video shot by people here last sunday. this is home video that some of the people in the businesses shot. they are just right at this point trying to do what they can no matter how many sandbags you put up, you have to remember that the water backs up so fast and also because they back up on the drains, you're seeing a lot of toxic sewage mixed in. at this point people here are

nbc bay area sky ranger was over that spot where the ace train number 1 stopped on the tracks with 223 passengers on board who were headed on the south bay from the tri-valley. ace used train number 3, which was staged at the pleasanton station to drag several cars and 229 passengers back to the press pleasanton station. we talked with rattled commuters. >> i was pushed forward. i wasn't holding on or nothing. both knees went down. i'm fine. >> the conductor tried to hit the brakes and then, boom, we hit a large tree laying over the tracks. once we hit the tree, we came to a stop and rolled. we felt we were going to tip and then the mudslide came and hit the side of the train and we were stopped. >> reporter: he is now planning on driving the 65 miles each way to santa clara for as long as there is rain in the forecast. he tells me he is not looking forward to spending hours in the car, but at least he has a car. the first gentleman told me without the train, he can't get to work at all. neither of them imagined that the trains would be stopped two days in a row. yesterday the train wa

live in capitola, robert handa, nbc bay area news. >> robert, thank you very much. we'll give you a look at what it looks like outside around the bay area from san francisco to san jose and dublin. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is continuing to track the storm that is moving out and what's on the way. you've got the satellite pictures. you've got the computer models. what are you seeing? >> i really wanted to underscore the reason why we're going to see this flooding threat on and off through the next several days. look at our rainfall totals here that we've had just in the past ten days. we're talking about a month's and or more of rainfall. 12.33 inches in ten days in kentfield. danville, 11.79. san francisco, 11 inches. redwood city, you've had a lot of problems there. that's because those numbers are up past 8 inches. the south bay, 2 to 7 inches. so the ground is saturated as we've been saying. right now we still have a flood warning out across contra costa, alameda counties. that's until 6:45 tonight because the creeks and streams are still running dangerous

welcome to nbc bay area news at 4:30. we have crews fanned out to bring you the latest on these storms, and our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is standing by with our next round of rain coming in. let's start with showing you one of the communities hit hardest by the latest round of rain. this is drone video of felton in the santa cruz mountains. flooded streets, evacuations, water rescues, cars submerged under water and the water rising into those homes. and this is the view from the ground. you can see parks and homes also under water. some drivers had to be rescued. as for the roadways in the santa cruz mountains, this is southbound 17 near the summit. a landslide has shut down traffic there forcing drivers to find another way to get to santa cruz. farther south this is video from sky ranger of 101 in gilroy. both north and southbound directions are shut down. cars have to take side streets to get around this watery mess. it is hard to get around the roadways. nbc bay area skyranger is live overhead. the chp reopened

. >> nbc bay area terry mcsweeney joins us live there. terry, you know so well that santos hello is a trouble spot with weather like this. >> reporter: yes. certainly. years ago, the entire downtown was inundated with floodwater. to this day, with a flood, checking out the creeks right through town. you can see, it is swirling, but it is nowhere near floor level. different story north of here, when we talk about what the family wants to know, if it's going to flood again at their house. they check out their community screens. the smith family keeps their eyes on computer screens to see how the creature doing and how much rain is falling while, at the same time, checking nbc bay area's website to see where the storm is right now. they caught a break in the storm tonight for about an hour, with the storm potentially bringing mud to their street and into the garage. that has happened many times before. >> the street you drive in on will be a river. i'll have a garage full of water, flooding to cleanup, which is not terrible, but the mud that
