this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm jessica aguirre, and, yes, i've said it so many times. ere we go again. the rain and wind not letting up in the bay area. another day of storms knocking down power for more than 193,000 pg&e customers. that number just in to our newsroom. we're also tracking a big issue on the bay bridge. the wind toppled a big rig, and that's turning the evening commute into gridlock. this is on the eastbound direction going out of san francisco. two lanes are finally open, but chp is asking truck drivers not to cross the bridge. tc is just too windy for the whole thing. >>> and there's trouble everywhere for drivers. this video just in from alameda fire depq8uvnt. trees toppled onto some cars on central avenue in alameda. also more problems in the east bay. a giant eucalyptus blew over, narrowly missed a home in san leandro. same tree wiped out the pedestrian footbridge which families use to take their kids to school. and check this out. it actually looked like a hurricane in the city. the wind blowing out a window in a high rise at 50 california street.

bay area and beyond. good afternoon, everyone. i'm janelle wang. welcome to nbc bay area news at 4:30 on this friday. the atmospheric river is now gone, but we are still feeling its impact at this hour, and there's even more rain throughout the weekend. the storm is strongly suspected in a deadly roof collapse today. one person died. another person was hurt at a coffee distribution warehouse in oakland. so much rain in such a quick amount of time turned freeways into ponds and rivers. this is a look at 101 in gilroy, which had to be shut down for hours today because of all the flooding. the lanes reopened just about three hours ago. the same can be said for 580 in oakland. lanes shut down because of too much standing water. everything fortunately is back to normal tonight on 580. to the south of us, take a look at this. this is a section of north main street in soquel in santa cruz county. it washed away the rain, keeping hundreds of people now stuck on the other side with no way to get out. just to the east of there, there's a community called corralitos. take a look at this landslide on eureka cany

here's nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney. terry? >> tonight we have been told that san francisco police sergeant brug let at that is being taken care of here at san francisco general hospital. the last official word we have is in critical condition. he was on duty, driving his city issued unmarked sedan when a tree came down on brotherhood way near the police department's shooting range. he was trapped inside. firefighters had to pry him out before rushing him to the hospital. tonight the police officer's association released a statement saying, the members of the sfpoa are praying for the speedy recovery of the sergeant, who received injuries while on duty. we're grateful to our san francisco firefighters who responded with great professionalism and care to assist our officer as well as the nurses and doctors who make up his medical care team. the storm also took two lives in the city. one, a woman walking on lincoln way near golden gate park. >> i saw the ambulance and the police officers come here and we walked by and saw the tra

've had some of the deadliest. the half moon bay shooting, the one at a dance hall in monterey park. but how did california compare to other states? >> reporter: well, good evening, janelle. interestingly enough, california actually has a smaller share of mass gun shootings than other states. we've got about 12.5% of the nation's population, and our share of these terribles is under 10%. so, okay, that's minor satisfaction considering everything that is going on. truly, california is different, very different from just about every other state. in fact, the giffords law center ranks california the best in the california that way because of all of the changes you see right there. universal background checks, assault weapons restrictions. that goes back to the famous stockton mass slaying in 1989. safe storage of arms, ammunition regulations. i've given you five of these major changes. in fact, there have been more than two dozen, almost all of them separates california from the rest of t

theranos defrauding investors and patients. >>> as the bay area marks three years since the start of the covid lockdown, we are moving you forward. as nbc bay area's bob redell reports, one prominent bay-area doctor is warning the next pandemic may be harder to fight. >> reporter: you'll recall when the covid-19 lockdowns and mandates started here in the bay area three years ago, there was little pushback. most people complied. dr. bob wapner, the chair of medicine at usdf think that is nationwide hundreds of thousands of people's lives were saved as a result. but he's worried if there is another pandemic say in five to ten years, there will be a lot of people who remember covid and they will push back on mandates and closures on day one. that's his opinion. he thinks more people will be killed as a result unnecessarily. three years into covid, he thinks the times for mandates as hassed, but he points out covid is still here nod rattly. at ucsf there are only about 20 to 25 people hospitalized with covid at his hospital. that's much less than the 150 covid patients a year ago. he also worries that people aren't getting good information
