bay area are looking for ways to help. >> we know a number of volunteers and first responders from the bay area are now on their way to help the people of maui. nbc bay area's bob redell is live at the san jose airport where flights have been arriving. bob, some people based in the bay area are headed in the other direction. >> reporter: correct. the local red cross is sending 13 volunteers from the bay area to help those in maui and hawaii. some are already there. some are en route like tom tanner from morgan hill. he's just off on a flight bound for honolulu that left about 20 minutes ago from manetta. when he arrives, he'll be helping coordinate the disaster response. red cross provides shelter, food, care, comfort for those who lost their homes. tom arrived at the airport here. he has deployed to about 25 disasters during his 18 years with the red cross, mostly to hurricanes and wildfires here on the mainland of the united states. hawaii he says will be different. >> i think the physical separation of the islands is going to be a unique challenge. i've never had to deal with that kind of situation before. so that will be interesting to see ho
