nbc bay area's robert handa joins us from outside the courthouse with a story you'll see only on nbc bay area. >> reporter: the allegations against trainer scott shaw go back many years and come from many different athletes in various sports. in fact, san jose state university has paid out millions of dollars to about 30 alleged victims to settle lawsuits. so the mistrial stunned the athletes, legal experts, and jurors. this man, who asked us not to show or identify him, was one of the jurors in the federal criminal case against trainer scott shaw, who faced six misdemeanor counts of inappropriately touching female athletes under the guise of athletic treatment. eight student athletes testified that shaw touched or fondled them. shaw pled not guilty. the jury voted overwhelmingly for guilty, but deadlocked on five of the charges 10-2, and 11-1 on the other. the juror we talked to says one juror influenced another to go along with her from the start, creating conflicts in the jury room right away. >> she just made it clear that she was not going to budge. an

you're watching "nbc bay area news tonight." >>> welcome back to "nbc bay area news tonight." pump those brakes. more problems are leading to new calls to limit those driverless cars in san francisco. this comes just a week after state regulators gave the green light to expand the robo taxi service. the latest push comes from san francisco's city attorney, david chew. he's formally asking regulators to pause those expansion plans for cruise and waymo. this move comes in the wake of our investigation that revealed self-driving cars don't always make for a smooth ride. we obtained documents that show self-driving cars have been involved in 280 crashes over the past five years across california, resulting in at least 64 injuries. specifically now in san francisco, in the last week alone, we've seen a lot of these videos pop up. a group of cruise cars causing a traffic jam in north beach. and another that stopped in the middle of an intersection. you see that car there, before turning into a construction zone and then stopping again on the wrong side of the road. >> regulators kne

nbc bay area's tom jensen talked to one of the first rangers on the scene and to shark experts as well about the history of sharks in the area. >> reporter: they weren't able to recover the kayak but through witness descriptions were able to confirm this was a great white shark at least 10 feet long. >> we believe it was a great white shark. we haven't recovered the kayaks so we weren't able to look at the teeth marks but everything makes us think it was a great white shark. >> reporter: this state park ranger supervisor says the kayaker and another eyewitness say on tuesday something rammed the fisherman's kayak as he was fishing near bean hollow state beach. they now say it was likely a great white shark 10 feet long. the ranger was one of the first people to talk to the kayaker after he swam to shore, fortunately unscathed. >> basically said he was eye to eye and he had the teeth of a shark wrap around the middle of his kayak. held on and kind of shook the kayak a bit and he got knocked out. >> reporter: the shark may have been after something like what this sunnyvale couple saw whi

we're excited for cooler weather. >>> back to nbc bay area's bob redell. we're talking about the east bay wine regions for the annual blessing of the grapes. >> reporter: brent amos, the winemaker here in livermore, when i asked what this year's harvest looks like, he says the 2023 vintage is looking very promising for a number of reasons. our historic winter storms saturated the soils. the vines grew a little sooner as a result, which means healthier plants. he didn't have to water until a good two to three months later than usual with about 20% to 30% less water overall. there is a little less fruit on the vines he says this year because of the mild spring and a couple of rainy periods in the middle of the bloom. the upside, those looser clusters of grapes are less prone to mold and mildew. over the past several years, the drought has forced winemakers like brent to harvest the food earlier to avoid the heat. brent anticipates this year's harvest to start in two to three weeks from now, which historically is along a more normal time frame. >> it's that go

"the new york times" reports she tripped over a chair at 1:00 yesterday afternoon and was admitted for about two hours. feinstein, who is 90 years old, has recently had other health problems which my colleague scott mcgrew will delve into shortly. senator has however rejected calls to resign and has insisted she will retire after she completes her current term as senator, which ends january of 2025. feinstein is a member of the senate judiciary committee that mays a critical role in confirming presidential appointments and federal judges. she's been a u.s. senator since 18992 an

in contra costa county, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >>> okay, here it goes. southern california bracing for hurricane hilary. the storm could bring rain to the bay area as well. right now hilary is a category 4 hurricane. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us. jeff, category 4 hurricane, that is big. will it cool off and slow down? >> i think we will see this drop-off in terms of intensity. yes, a very powerful storm system we are looking at right now that stretches over 1,000 miles wide. now the current stats has us at a very ferocious category 4, winds of 130 miles per hour. central pressure also continuing to drop down to 948 millibars. the lower that number goes, the stronger the storm is getting. it's still showing signs of strengthening now. look at the center of the hurricane, the eye of the hurricane, this is textbook example of what a hurricane should look like this size. by tomorrow down to 120 miles an hour. north of san diego by sunday night, winds of 50 miles an hour and it moves through central california sunday night into monday. this is a b

bay area are looking for ways to help. >> we know a number of volunteers and first responders from the bay area are now on their way to help the people of maui. nbc bay area's bob redell is live at the san jose airport where flights have been arriving. bob, some people based in the bay area are headed in the other direction. >> reporter: correct. the local red cross is sending 13 volunteers from the bay area to help those in maui and hawaii. some are already there. some are en route like tom tanner from morgan hill. he's just off on a flight bound for honolulu that left about 20 minutes ago from manetta. when he arrives, he'll be helping coordinate the disaster response. red cross provides shelter, food, care, comfort for those who lost their homes. tom arrived at the airport here. he has deployed to about 25 disasters during his 18 years with the red cross, mostly to hurricanes and wildfires here on the mainland of the united states. hawaii he says will be different. >> i think the physical separation of the islands is going to be a unique challenge. i've never had to deal with that kind of situation before. so that will be interesting to see ho
