here's nbc bay area's velena jones. a very unnerving wake up call near the area of cutting boulevard and second street in richmond this morning. martin richert was at his business and heard the boom and called police. it was loud enough and it and it shook the windows. richmond police say they got calls reporting a copper theft and explosion in the area. when firefighters arrived, they found a man's body in an underground pg&e vault submerged in about five feet of water. investigators say it appears the man was electrocuted, triggering a power outage. looks like he was trying to traverse on that makeshift catwalk. came into contact with some energized electrical. and that's what caused the issue. there was no actual fire or, you know, any sort of explosion in that sense. as far as, like an eruption. people who work in this area say they are sad but not surprised that this happened. noting that this area is known to have a lot of unhoused individuals, and they often see them going into manholes like the one described ther

in san jose, robert honda, nbc bay area news. today, the fda gave the green light to two updated covid 19 vaccines. it comes as california and other states report very high levels of covid activity. now, this is the third time the current vaccine has been updated to match circulating strains. the shots should be available within days. health experts say only 22% of people got the last booster. a new round of spraying is happening tonight after the discovery of mosquitoes with west nile virus. just last week, santa clara county reported its first death from west nile virus since 2006. that's why it's spraying in these areas. you see on your screen that yellow area. you can see it's mostly in the areas just east of highway 87, down into south san jose, and an area there on the center of your screen. that's like the two 8017 interchange. the county says people living in that area do not need to relocate, since pesticides are released at what it calls, quote, an ultra low volume spraying will start at ten tonight. it's supposed to la

some bay area firefighters remain on the fire lines trying to help stop the spread. nbc bay area's christie smith reports. you can see it from our nbc bay area traffic cameras. the hazy sky over santa clara county. there's a thin layer of smoke from wildfires that are sort of in california, oregon, washington, all the way up through canada, they're sort of this thin layer is overlaying the bay area and we're seeing some smoky and hazy skies. aaron richardson is a spokesperson for the bay area air quality management district. on thursday, the agency issued an air quality advisory that's been extended again through tomorrow along the coast, we're seeing good air quality, and a little bit in the east bay. in the south bay, we're seeing some moderate air quality. we're not anticipating that air quality at ground level. will be too bad. if we did, we would be issuing a full spare the air alert. he says the advisory is more of a precaution, while moderate air quality won't affect most people too much. but anyone who's especially sensitive, who's got preexisting respiratory or

pete suratos nbc, bay area news. ea is one step closer to extending bart thanks to a huge chunk of money from the federal government. you might recall the vta had plans to complete a 16 mile extension. it's to connect bart to downtown san jose and to santa clara. today, the chair of the vta board said it's getting $5.1 billion from president biden's new start engineering program. san jose mayor matt mahan says the feds committed the money because voters did their part over the years to provide other funding. and now the federal government has come through and matched the commitment and the risk taking and the sacrifice of our community. even with this historic investment, though, there's still $700 million short. leaders say they'll be working to figure out how to get the rest of that money. well, another high profile bay area company is leaving the state. this time it's chevron. chevron said today it will be leaving san ramon and moving to houston, texas. chevron has been here since 1879 and was once even known as th

marianne favro nbc bay area news. an encouraging sign san francisco's overdose crisis may be improving. new data shows the number of deadly overdoses may have declined for a second consecutive month. 39 people died of overdoses in july. that's a 50% drop from july 2023, and marks the lowest month since january 2020. the city has also seen an overall decrease of 15% so far this year, compared to 2023. our responsibility is to make sure that people have access to treatment. we've doubled down on that. we continue to do that. the most effective treatment for opioid use disorder are the medications methadone and buprenorphine. these medications reduce the risk of death in some cases by as much as half. and the health department is urging the state to pass a bill authored by san francisco assemblyman matt haney. they say it would align the state with new federal regulations that would expand access to opioid addiction treatment, like methadone. disgraceful and heartless. that's how the oakland police officers union is desc

nbc bay area's bob redell explains what's on the table. there are concerns that artificial turf fields like the one behind me here at santa clara's youth soccer field next to levi's stadium, could be releasing chemicals that could be harmful to people. this afternoon, the santa clara county board of supervisors will vote on a new ordinance that would ban the installation of artificial turf on county owned properties and would require that existing turf be ripped out, if not properly maintained. the santa clara county medical association supports this ban because it says chemicals in the fake grass have been linked to cancer. another group called mothers out front silicon valley, says artificial turf poses a particular health risk to children who play sports on these fields. it causes more injuries, but what concerns me the most is the toxic chemical soup of chemicals that's in it. turf has been proved safe and over and over again over a number of years, and studies by the environmental protection agency, by the cdc, by the consumer product

here's nbc bay area's sergio quintana. at valencia and 23rd streets in san francisco, video shows dirt bikers popping wheelies on the center bike lane and doing donuts in the intersection. and it went on and on. and on, and there was no stop to it. for more than 90 minutes, san francisco resident sharky laguana shot video of the group of about 100 motorbikers take over the intersection just before their arrival in the mission. they had done similar stunts in the castro neighborhood. traffic there ground to a crawl one of the cars that seemed to be associated with the motorbike group parked in the street, blocking the f-line streetcar for a few minutes. in video shot in the mission, police did eventually show up with lights and sirens. the bikers rode off, some, even doing spinouts right in front of the officers along the way. laguana says he's used to the occasional group of dirt bikers riding through the city, but this was next level. they have to be held accountable. if they're not held accountable, it's just going to ke

here's nbc bay area's gia vang with more. reporter flames from the park fire have consumed more than 390,000 acres. and these are some of the animals a shelter in chico requested help to move to make space for other animals sure to come in as the fire continues to scorch more land. berkeley humane answered that call, returning from picking up the animals tuesday night, 25 cats and ten dogs creatively, problem solving using their mobile adoption unit. but then it became an emergency shelter last night because we got back really late because in addition to the park fire animals, we have 90 cats and kittens. so we were already at capacity, but we knew we had to respond to help them. others are responding to in all, about half of the animals like thorpe here have gone to a foster home. i'm so relieved that these animals have a place to be. yeah. thank you guys. it's a forever home. the animals will need the onus now on berkeley humane. the shelter says check its website in the next couple of weeks, it'll get populated with a new
