ian cull nbc, bay area news. while a driver is in critical condition after barely surviving a scary crash in the east bay. a woman went off the road on pacheco boulevard just before midnight last night. firefighters say she hit a fire hydrant and went airborne for about 300ft before plunging into grayson creek. some nearby businesses were flooded by that gushing hydrant. it's unknown if the driver was impaired, but firefighters do say she appeared to be speeding. a violent start to the new year in oakland. four people were killed in separate incidents new year's eve and early this morning. meanwhile, a vigil was held in oakland in honor o of car grant a young black man shot and killed by a bart police officer 16 years ago. nbc bay area'shom jensen has more from grant's family, who says they're saddened by the violence in the town. not the start to the new year that this city and the people at this annual vigil had hoped for more violence to ring in 2025, as oakland desperately tries to improve its reputation and m

memories and new concerns for many in the bay area tonight, watching the disaster unfold on tv is especially tough for those who've been through it themselves. as nbc bay area's jodi hernandez reports, the closure of two bay area fire stations this week is only adding to their fears. it was a wasteland, one of the most beautiful, expensive areas in oakland was a wasteland. jacqueline brown remembers all too well the devastation the oakland hills fire caused in 1991. not only was her family home, an entire neighborhood leveled. her next door neighbors were killed in the blaze, she says the fires in southern california are bringing back all the bad memories. it's not something you can describe. it's something you have to feel and it never goes away. you can put it in a safe place, but it's always tucked away. i feel vulnerable, i'm scared. my family is in this community and we know what can happen in a fire situation. long time oakland resident larry hill says the southern california fires have triggered a lot of fear. the city shuttered two fire stations on monday in an effort to balance the budget, and he says he doesn't feel safe. it can happen he

bay area mountains. the minutes from now, santa clara county will swear in its first vietnamese american supervisor. nbc bay area's robert honda joins us from a community celebration underway for this milestone moment. the swearing in of betty jung as the district two santa clara county supervisor launches a big year for the south bay's vietnamese american community, the largest group of its kind outside of vietnam itself. not only is jung the first vietnamese american county supervisor, but she takes office during the 50th anniversary of the fall of saigon. her family came here when the county declared itself as a refugee site in the 1970s. being born at the county hospital. growing up in county services, helping my family navigate those services as their family. as the family translator alongside my sisters, they did their part to being able to now not only serve at the county for the last decade, but then to be able to be the first supervisor. it is an opportunity to continue the work that has already been done. jung became a lawyer and a familiar face in the county, including spending time as a coun

a number of bay area cities are already making plans to create those zones, but are looking at a number of issues, both pro and con. nbc bay area's robert honda joins us from santa clara to show us how some cities, big and small, are weighing this idea. entertainment zones that allow people to consume alcohol in public areas, such as sidewalks and streets, create different issues for big cities like san jose, as opposed to smaller cities like here in santa clara, which is more concerned with attracting people to its new downtown. santa clara has been called the fastestrowing city in the state, spurred on by the construction of levi's stadium, and it plans to create two entertainment zones in its planned new downtown and uptown around levi's. we're going to have an actual entertainment district within an entertainment district for shopping theaters, art districts really uses that are going to really transcend with the with our convention center and our stadium. so they're all going to be there's going to be a synergy out there. californians sometimes are afraid of fun. and if you've got a, you know, a downtown where you

marianne favro nbc, bay area news. well, san francisco's incoming mayor is focused on community service this weekend. ahead of his inauguration, mayor elect daniel lowry joined several neighborhood cleanups in different parts of the city today. the events were hosted in part by the civic joy fund, which he co-founded. the group organizes weekend trash pickups for volunteers looking to help make san francisco safer and cleaner. lowry says his priorities remain the same, and he is looking forward to leading the city by the bay public safety, clean streets, making sure we get people off the streets and into mental health and drug treatment beds, get people the help that they need and they deserve. but we can't let people suffer on our streets any longer. and then making sure that we streamline the bureaucracy. he added that he wants to see everyone do their part to reclaim san francisco's mantle of being one of the greatest cities in the world. lowry will be inaugurated at civic center plaza on wednesday. to georgia we go

this is nbc bay area news. tonight, i'm jessica aguirre, and of course, we are going to start with those big new year's preps in san francisco. in just five hours, fireworks will light up the bay as thousands of people say bye bye to 2024. but will the revelers be actually be able to see it? there is fog in the forecast. we're going to talk about that in minute, but it not be too bad. but first let's check in with a very bundled up sergio quintana in san francisco, where thousands of people are gathering along the embarcadero, said hill. well, you can see that they've already started setting up a lot of the things that they're going to have in place for the thousands of people that are expected down here at the embarcadero at midnight, they've got some of the fences up here along the embarcadero, pretty close to where the actual fireworks are expected to be launched. they're going to be launched from a barge. it's going to be right here between the bay bridge and the ferry building, which is in that direction.

bay area. let's take a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. some bridge tolls and transit fares are going up this year, starting today. nbc bay area's christie smith has reaction from commuters about having to pay a little bit more at the start of the new year. comes with something to factor in for many bay area drivers, the cost to cross any of the seven state owned toll bridges is rising by a dollar. i really need my car for some reason. like, say, i'm lugging a bunch of stuff back or whatever. then i'll take it. i'll take the car and just, you know, pay the extra fare. because unfortunately, this is a car nation. unfortunately, pablo morales relies on muni in san francisco more than a car, but some muni fares are rising too. i guess i mean, just like with everything else, everything is going up. but also, i know, like they're also strapped on. the infrastructure is strapped on cash right now, so it's also understandable. with the dollar change, regular tolls will go from 7 to $8. bart fares will rise 5.5%, or about $0.25 more for an average trip, and some muni fares will go up about $0.25. riders we spoke with see it t

nbc bay area news.l, she just left congress last week, but barbara lee isn't done with politics. apparently, the former congresswoman announced today that she is officially running for mayor of oakland. lee broke that news in a video message this morning. it follows weeks of speculation and a public push from other city and community leaders. 78 year old, no stranger to the town, she's been on oakland ballots for three decades, having first been elected to the state legislature in 1990. and she's represented oakland for close to 30 years in the house. this is really important in terms of trying to bring people together, because so many people i've talked to, labor, business, community activists, i've talked to members of the clergy, and the same issues keep coming up. and so i said, well, let's do this. and i'm very excited. now, lee is facing more than a dozen other potential candidates. oakland voters will ultimately decide who their next mayor will be in a special election on april 15th. we're back i

marianne favro, nbc, bay area news. well, nearly 300 pounds of fentanyl was seized at the san diego border in 2024. that's according to the state attorney general. and while that might not sound like much, the synthetic opioid is so powerful 300 pounds of fentanyl contains more than 30 million potentially lethal doses. in 2023, the state first partnered with the federal fentanyl abatement and suppression team, also known as fast, and last year they made close to 150 arrests. the goal is to stop drug trafficking across the us-mexico border in 2022. the california department of justice has seized more than 13 million fentanyl pills and made 370 fentanyl related arrests. well, a leadership switch up in oakland. the city is getting a new mayor, city attorney and shifting its city council all in one day. they'll all face some tough challenges almost immediately. nbc bay area's velena jones was at today's inauguration and sorts out who is now in charge in oakland, and council member gave a motion passes with a vote of eight a

robert honda, nbc, bay area news. new information tonight on the rape case involving the former san francisco 49ers dana stubblefield. he will have to spend at least another two weeks in jail. an appeals court overturned stubblefield's conviction last week. it determined prosecutors made racially discriminatory statements about him being black, and since then, the department of corrections moved stubblefield from corcoran state prison, which is 160 miles south of the bay area, to elmwood jail in milpitas. now, this morning, stubblefield's attorneys returned to santa clara county superior court, but the motion to release stubblefield was continued to january 17th. the court says it needs more time to review the motion and see who has jurisdiction. the judge was very sympathetic about our situation, and he recognizes that under law, he should be returned to the status that he had prior to this false conviction. stubblefield's attorneys say their first priority is to get stubblefield released. then they plan to ask the j
