tonight in the bay area. good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. a lot happening on this wednesday evening here in town, down in la and at the white house. let's begin in the south bay. a gut wrenching story involving students at hollister high school. three classmates died in a car crash. the chp says they were among four people traveling on shore road in gilroy around 7:00 last night. their car veering into oncoming traffic and hitting another vehicle. three students died, but a fourth person survived and was rushed to a local hospital. paramedics also took the driver of the other car to the hospital. investigators are still trying to figure out what happened, why this car veered into the other lanes. the students identities have not been released, but word spread quickly at hollister high. when i got the news of this. at first we didn't have the ids yet, so once we got the ids, it was it was heartbreaking. you know, you go through that little bit of shock and then you're ultimately jumping into, okay, now we've got to help support our students,

bay area kidnaper charged with new crimes. we're joined by the police chief who cracked the case by riding him in person. good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight, and i'm jessica aguirre. tonight in los angeles, day three of an intense and deadly firefight. and another fire is now exploding in size. we're talking about the kenneth fire. it ignited in the west hills area of los angeles just this afternoon. and it, too, is fueled by the santa ana winds. it has exploded to more than 900 acres in just the past couple of hours. now, this is burning off of highway 101 near the los angeles ventura county border. evacuations were ordered immediately, and we're learning that investigators are interviewing a possible person of interest connected to that fire and any possible connections to other fires. senator adam schiff is telling people they need to get out now. we keep seeing these fires pop up in different places. we may see more before this is over. if you're told to evacuate, then get the hell out. you might think you can outrun a fire. you are not going to outrun these fires. you are not going to outrun the fires. that is the truth. now the wind

this is nbc bay area news tonight, and i'm jessica aguirre. we start with new charges tonight for a notorious bay area kidnaper. he's now being tied to another kidnaping in the bay area. and the police chief of seaside is being credited with helping to crack that case. matthew muller was convicted in the 2015 so-called gone girl kidnaping in vallejo. the details at that time were so astonishing that police initially accused the victim, denise huskins, of making the entire story up with her boyfriend. muller was ultimately linked to the crimes and arrested. he's currently serving 40 years. now, last month, he was charged with two other home invasions in the south bay. that happened before the gone girl case that were very similar. and now he's been linked to yet another kidnaping in the east bay. authorities say muller held three people at a home in san ramon i in april of 2015, demanding one of them withdraw tens of thousands of dollars from their bank. police say after he got that money, he let them go. investigators claim muller confessed to

nbc, bay area news. new information tonight on the rape case involving the former san francisco 49ers dana stubblefield. he will have to spend at least another two weeks in jail. an appeals court overturned stubblefield's conviction last week. it determined prosecutors made racially discriminatory statements about him being black, and since then, the department of corrections moved stubblefield from corcoran state prison, which is 160 miles south of the bay area, to elmwood jail in milpitas. now, this morning, stubblefield's attorneys returned to santa clara county superior court, but the motion to release stubblefield was continued to january 17th. the court says it needs more time to review the motion and see who has jurisdiction. the judge was very sympathetic about our situation, and he recognizes that under law, he should be returned to the status that he had prior to this false conviction. stubblefield's attorneys say their first priority is to get stubblefield released. then they plan to ask the judge to dismiss the case. well, the streets of san francisco be safer in 2025. well, the city certain

christie smith, nbc, bay area news. new tonightla fire in contra costa county is being investigated as arson. it happened just before three this afternoon in a parking lot on arnold drive in martinez. investigators have not said how it started. the video shows flames and smoke coming out of the car's windows. firefighters responded eventually were able to get the flames out. no word on any injuries. oakland police are trying to figure out if a string of burglaries are connected. that video right there showing a car slamming the security gate at a smoke shop on san pablo avenue before at least six people run into the business. luckily, no one was hurt, but that was just one of three burglaries that happened overnight. the first one happened at the extra mile gas station at 17th and castro streets, and the second at the safeway at the ridge shopping center. and the final one was at the smoke shop. in all three cases, the thieves broke down the door before taking off with a cash register and other items. police are asking anyone with

nbc, bay area news. we continue to follow breaking news in los angeles tonight, where a ferocious wildfire has forced 30,000 people to flee their homes. luckily, so far, no injuries reported, but the palisades fire has already destroyed multiple homes, ballooning to more than 1200 acres since just 10:00 this morning. several bay area cal fire crews are already in southern california, assisting with the firefight. some neighbors even had to flee on foot. dozens of cars abandoned on palisades drive in the mad rush to get out of the neighborhood. and fire crews then had to clear the road using a bulldozer so they could get in some of those cars, catching fire from flying embers. governor newsom is down in l.a. urging people to act on evacuation orders and telling others in the area to have a fire plan ready. with the santa ana winds expected to pick up even more this evening, you may feel at home that you're fine. down in riverside county, san bernardino county, down in ventura county. other parts of the state. but there's a reason we pre-positioned hundreds of assets and personnel on sunday in anticipation of
