this is an nbc news special report. the news we bring you today is a little bit difficult to track down and confirm but we're getting a lot of reports, especially over social media and other sources that a plane has crashed somewhere near the ukraine-russia border. we are being told this is a malaysia air flight that started out in amsterdam on its way to kuala lumpur. >> and apparently this happened somewhere near the ukrainian-russian border in that airspace. we want to get right to nbc's tom costello. we've got multiple other news organizations reporting from that area that there were 295 souls on board. tom, what's the latest you've been able to find out? >> reporter: we are told this is malaysia flight 17, 17. amsterdam to kuala lumpur. it was a boeing 777 and it has gone down, we are led to believe by these reports coming from the interfax news agency out of russia as well as the a.p. and reuters, gone down near the ukrainian and russian border, an area that has been the scene of a great deal of military conflict.
