let's turn now to an nbc news exclusive. inside the aggressive new u.s. strategy to fight the taliban. with the top american commander in afghanistan. who tonight for the first time is revealing why the u.s. dropped so-called mother of all bombs in that country earlier this year. nbc news pentagon correspondent hans nichols is in kandahar. >> reporter: the message delivered to a remote base by a u.s. commander to his afghan counterpart, stay on offense. the goal really is to stand up the afghan forces, help them defeat the taliban, and so the taliban can be forced to negotiating table. here after 16 years of war the taliban controls 40% of the country. general john nicholson, the top commander in afghanistan, says the goal is to retake most of that territory in two years. as of right now, stalemate or winning? >> oh, we're still in a stalemate. we're only 90 days into this new policy. >> reporter: that new policy includes more american troops and trainers to fight alongside the afghans. a topic discussed over tea between brigadier general and general naza

and those allegations have been in some cases reported to nbc news human resources. and in several cases they've been reported out into detail in "variety" and "the new york times." so that's one of the open questions here. will more accusers come forward? beyond that, though, now that there are multiple allegations involving multiple nbc employees over multiple years, that, of course, raises the question of whether nbc had knowledge of allegations about matt lauer in the past, and if so, how were those allegations handled? today, "variety" made a nonspecific claim that several women, quote, complained to executives at the network about lauer's behavior which fell on deaf ears. now, nbc news today took issue with that. they responded to that by saying prior to monday night this week, quote, we can say unequivocally that prior to monday night, current nbc news management was never made aware of any complaints about matt lauer's conduct. so nbc news tells us they are and have been looking into whether any current or former nbc news executives have received any complaint

nbc news tells us that they found that allegation credible. confronted matt lauer and he did not deny it. that led to the process of him being fired. nbc also tells us that matt lauer was fired for cause, which implies he will not be paid out for rest of his contract but nbc news is not confirming that implication explicitly one way or the other. nbc is our parent company here. reporting on this story taking place in our own proverbial house as best as we've been able to report it out today. as far as i personally can tell, these are the open questions important as of tonight. open questions that i should say we expect we should get answers to at some point. first one obviously, will there be more people who come forward with accusations about matt lauer? already over the course of today that's started to happen. after firing was announced, "variety" published accounts from three women separate from the complaint made monday night. once gave a colleague a sex toy as present and explicit note about how he wanted to use it on her. left her mortif

new accusations. at least three women have come forward to nbc. among them one accuser who alleges she was sexually assaulted in lauer's office in 2001 according to a report in "the new york times." she told the paper she passed out during the incident and woke up on the floor of his office. she says lauer had his assistant take her to a nurse. an nbc spokesperson would not comment on the details citing privacy issues. altogether there may be as many as six accusers. questions have been raised about whether nbc news executives knew of the complaints prior to monday. several former nbc news executives we spoke with today told us they didn't know of any complaints. and the network responded saying unequivocally no current management new about any allegations. the string of allegations together with how swiftly matt lauer lost his anchor share have many wondering if this will change tv newsroom culture especially after high profile anchors at cbs news and fox news have also been fired. >> the curtain's being pulled back. >> the curtain is being pulled
