rosemary connors from our nbc station in philadelphia joins us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frances. according to the affidavit, andrea constand became connected with bill cosby through temple. he would have her over for dinner along with other temple employees, professors, administrators. she belonged they had a friendship. the affidavit said on one night in early 2004 when constand was over at bill cosby's home here, he offered her some pills. she had been complaining of feeling drained and having trouble sleeping at night be, so he offered her some pills to take the edge off, to relax. constand alleges after she took those pills she was paralyzed, frozen and was in and out of consciousness. despite her impaired condition, she was aware of what happens happening, that bill cosby was touching her and that she was physically unable to stop it and she did not consent to it. bill cosby told police and investigators that this was a con sensual relationship that he and andrea constand were romantically involved and that the pills he gave

let's get to rosemary connors from our nbc station in philadelphia. she's outside cosby's home in cheltenham. rosemary, good to have you with us. can you talk to us a little bit about the timing of the prosecutor's filing for these charges and what their motivation was? >> reporter: good morning, ayman. yeah, prosecutors had a fast-approaching deadline to meet. we're talking about the statute of limitations. it's 12 years here in pennsylvania, and it was just about to expire within the next few days. that's why prosecutors made the announcement yesterday. now, they've been working on this case, this reinvestigation, the reopening of this case for about six months now. and the reason why they decided to reopen the case is two reasons. one, the current district attorney was able to get her hands on some depositions that had been sealed from the civil case involving andrea constand and bill cosby. in those depositions, bill cosby made several admissions during his interviews with attorney. for instance, he admitted to obtaining prescription drugs for qua

let's get more from jonathan dienst, chef investigative report, our nbc station in new york. and as mentioned, jonathan, this guy was called the most hated person. you're not going to have a lot of people feeling sorry for him, but what's behind these charges? >> he was called this because he raised the aids drug from $13 up to $750 overnight for just one pill. spaing o i sparking outrage across the country. before he took over his current company, he was running a hedge fund at a different pharmaceutical company. and they say during that time, 2013, 2014, he was taking money out of the pharmaceutical company to pay off losers, people who have lost money in his hedge fund. so sort of like a ponzi scheme, shuffling the money around, moving money around to pay people off with money they weren't entitled to get. those are the allegations. he has been the subject of a lawsuit from his former company as a result of that. he has long denied any wrongdoing, saying, you know, i did nothing wrong in this case, but that's what this is about, that he took money out of one company to pay
