in fact, nbc news also would be staying behind, so to speak, with the parent of nbc universal, whichld still include peacock, the universal studios andthe nbc broad cast network and the theme parks. he explains what he believe is the strategy behind that. >> well, my understanding of comcast strategy, you know, i try to follow it. i am an investor in comcast, is that the goal is to morph nbc, the network, into peacock. it's just a change in distribution technology. but as time goes on and the public gets more and more used to random acts as content, that the plan would be to have nbc really become peacock, to become indistinguishable, i think that's why brian is focused on investing in sports, important sports, to give that transition. >> of course, sports includes the nba rights, which, as you know, we paid -- or comcast or nbc universal has paid a good amount for, for the next 11 years beginning in the next season. you know, john, unclear exactly if this were to come to fruition, again, it's just being studied, where would the entity trade, would there be sponsorship? would you get

peacock is very much part of the growth potential of the nbc universal company, including, of course,the broadband and whierless that comcast is so very much invested in right now. there's a lot of questions how this could happen, but the reason why we're talking about this now is because, of course, the weakness in the capable space. we've seen a decline in the total number of pay tv subscribers, and a lot of ad revenue really shift over into streaming. >> tom, let me get to you. you have a strong track record of spotting the trend before it happens, and taking advantage, creating a vehicle to drive in new directions with new media, and new delivery services, what do you make of the idea and how would you get it done? >> well, clearly it under scores the fact that we're beyond the point of no return with cord cutting. these linear cable channels burden the other parts of comcast, all of which have good growth stories against them. i personally believe cnbc in particular has a role in the streaming world under a very different model, because it's about the only cable channel out there

what we know is all at this point is what was just said by mike kavanaugh, who runs nbc universal, onhe conference call for what also were, by the way, fairly strong earnings for comcast and getting a good response from the stock market, at least in the early going, obviously, before trade, but he said that the company is exploring whether by creating a new -- and this is an important usage here -- well capitalized company owned by shareholders, so, spun off to shareholders, and comprised of a strong portfolio of cable networks, would position them to take advantage of opportunities in the changing media landscape and create value. so, what are they saying? they're saying they're at least exploring, and my understanding is it is very early here. they chose to say it on the call as a result of the fact that it most likely would have leaked, and so they're even at the point where it's not clear to me that they've hired advisors, for example, but they are exploring the possibility of spinning off all of the cable networks, including, by the way, the one that we work werfor, you're talg a

nbc's george solis is at columbia university. what are you hearing from people there, george? >> reporter: on this grim day, october 7th. we have seen a number of demonstrations of protests, even leading up to to the day. at columbia, things have remained peaceful. a number of demonstrators oulds outside the hall. the hostages have yet to come home, but no closer to a cease fire deal. talking to students on the ground, they say there's moment of escalation when pro palestinian protesters set up on the opposite side of the where the students are and there's a current art installation commemorating and remembering the lives lost. there were moments of tension. i cannot underscore the presentation of nypd officials around campus to make sure these situations don't escalate further than they need to. for a lot of jewish students and faculty, today was not a day for them to reminisce about the past protests and demonstrations and violence that they saw over the last year. it was really just a moment to reflect on the lives lost during the deadly attack, as well as praying for those

nbc news senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell, michael steele, co-host of msnbc's "the weekend" and former rnc chairman and the dean of public service at the university of arkansas and also an america s nbc contributor. steve, what do these numbers tell us about the state of the race? >> ana, it tells us our poll has changed a little bit since the last time we polled this race as you show there. 48-48 all tied up. a month ago our poll did show kamala harris five points ahead of donald trump. what happened there in terms of events in the last month that might have changed? well, this was taken this last poll just after that first debate, harris versus trump. since then there's been the vp debate and harris has done a number of interviews. there have been many other campaign events and i think one of the biggest changeses that you see here underneath that top line number there in this poll has to do with the basic attitudes voters have towards these candidates. we asked folks do you have a positive or negative view of them, and you can see where it is right now. they basically look the same. both 43% positive, and harris, 49 negative and want much diff

tonight, the university tells us they have no comment about this walkout. from nbc bay area. sky ranger. we see pro-palestinian demonstrators, but we can also see a few people at the protest carrying the israeli flag. an update now to a story we first reported yesterday. san francisco police are now investigating the vandalism at manny's cafe as a hate crime. the vandalism happened as a large pro-palestinian demonstration was wrapping up nearby on sunday. video posted to social media appears to show the suspect, a man with his face covered spray painting on the walls of manny's, which is a jewish owned cafe in the mission district. police have not yet made any arrests. jury selection has started for the trial of nima momeni. he's accused of murdering former tech executive bob lee in san francisco last year. it's a case that has received a lot of attention nationwide. many of the potential jurors today say they've heard about the case, but haven't formed any kind of opinions about it. here's nbc bay area's cindy quintana in san francisco. this video of nima was taken early on.

university is stepping up security for players. this is all part of an apparent protest against allowing transgender athletes on college sports teams. nbc bay area's ian cull has the latest. the san jose state volleyball team was given extra security tonight, as the team will play at colorado state. it follows allegations there is a transgender athlete on the sjsu team and a federal lawsuit against the ncaa policy, which allows transgender athletes to compete on women's teams under certain conditions. a member of the spartans roster joined that suit last week, claiming having a transgender teammate is unsafe for her. her teammates and opposing teams. nbc bay area is not naming the player. four schools have now forfeited games against the spartans, the latest utah state in joining southern utah, wyoming and boise state. the statements from those schools did not include a reason, but state lawmakers like the governor of idaho and house speaker in utah have applauded the decision, saying they are taking action to preserve women's sports. i think it's great that san jose state university is taking a stand by, just not making a change to who
