>> caller: a lot of that will depend on the ncaa's investigation, which frankly the ncaa is notoriousansparency in their investigation, but it's a very fragile time right now. i think in college football. mark 'em ert, the president of the ncaa has come out and said we take these matters very seriously. it's very important to us. right now the ncaa when you lay out all of the allegations, when you lay out all the individuals involved and the fact that many of them have spread out across the country, you're looking at ncaa investigation that will probably be one of the most expensive in the history of that association as far as the sanctions, you know, we won't know until the end. but i think the allegations that are laid out are probably as serious as anything we've seen and i think you probably have to go back 25 years to southern methodist university when that school received the death penalty for some sort of similar violation. >> based on your investigation, we're talking about players, coaches. the allegations are really something. something that we've seen before. is there a cha

he told a sports reporter that the school broke ncaa rules from 2002 to 2010. a number of miami coaches and players knew about it and played along in some cases. during the investigation bayou who sports that included an audit and 100 hours of interviews, shapiro shared the details about gifts to six dozen former hurricane players and recruits, and the gifts are draw dropping. hundreds of thousands of cash, rides on the yacht, and paid trips to restaurants and night clubs, and the players were offered bounties for injuring players on opposing teams. and the former booster said he paid to get prostitutes for players, and he paid for an abortion who claimed a hurricane player got her pregnant. the university of miami takes any allegations seriously and we will continue to cooperate fully in a joint investigation with the ncaa. the ncaa's president also issued this statement saying, quote, if the assertions are true the alleged conduct at the university of miami is an illustration for the need for fundamental change in many aspects of college sports. this pertains

the allegations are serious, they are scandalous they are being taken very seriously now by the ncaa,tional colleaguuate athletics association which has been looking into them for the last five months. they're being taken seriously by the university of miami. you heard the coach say that they're cooperating. other officials say they'll cooperate fully and transparentally. it's having a huge impact in south florida, too. the fans are very worried about this. business owners are concerned because of the possibility of sanctions by the ncaa if these allegations are proven true. if they're rue, they would seem to be on the face in clear violation of the rules that apply to student athletes. there could be punishment for the university. one of those being discussed is a thing called a death penalty. it's an extreme measure that would ban the team from further play for a while and that would have a huge immaterial pact on the university. a huge impact on this community. most people think it would likely be too severe and doesn't seem that that would be the way the ncaa would go. it is somet

the ncaa investigations, new stuff out of miami. we have been talking about this scandal. they went back to practice today and two of the players were saying how this will not keep them from getting ready for the season. >> for people who do not know the story, some guy who was in prison is talking about how he used to give money to the players, that would be eliminated if they gave the athletes a little bit of money. even putting it into an escrow account so that when they graduate they get $50,000. these guys spend five-six hours a day on football. they are like employees in a sense, only that are not getting paid. >> they went back to practice yesterday trying to put this behind them. >> look at this gigantic lobster. they found this in canada. they took pity on this crustacean. 18 lbs., 75 years old. instead of eating it, it is in an aquarium in coney island, n.y.. look at his claws. >> we can visit it if we go to coney island? >> yes. you cannot eat it. how >> is at the world's biggest lobster? >> i do not know, but it is huge!

the first order of business will be what will the university and the ncaa, what will they do, what can 12 players and take some sort of action before the season starts. beyond that this is going to be a lengthy, widespread and very deep investigation on behalf of the ncaa, possibly one of the biggest investigations in the history of the institution. >> do you think it could bring down the program? >> i think it has potential to be as damaging to miami as, you know, any college sports investigation that we've seen the ncaa engage in really since 25 years ago. obviously that resulted in the death penalty. i tend to believe that this won't. i don't think the ncaa will ever use the death penalty again, but this will probably -- this could potentially come as close as anything we've seen in the last 25 years. jenna: the death penalty, no football ever again. charles, what a story, what an investigation. thanks for coming on and telling us a little bit about this reporting. we'll continue to follow the story. as you mentioned we're only a couple of weeks away from the start of football. rick

today the head of the ncaa said if the allegations are true, a, quote, fundamental change in athleticsay be needed. not just in miami, but nationwide. charles robinson is an investigative reporter for yahoo! sports. he's the reporter who broke the story. he joins us now on the phone. charles, thank you for your time. >> thanks for having me. >> let me be honest here. a lot of people are saying they're not really surprised by this. we've heard this kind of thing so often. what makes this miami case, though, more scandalous than perhaps some of the other things we've seen and heard in the past? >> well, i think, you know, really just the length of time that was involved here. we're talking about eight years. we're talking about the number of individuals involved. we were able to corroborate as many as 72 athletes who received some form of benefits, seven coaches and three support staff members. we either had knowledge or took part in some rules violations with this booster, nevin shapiro. i think the fact that nevin shapiro is an individual who engaged in a $930 million ponzi scheme, one

the ncaa says for five months now, they have been investigating the relationship between shapiro andniversity. he's serving 20 years in prison for running a ponzi scheme claims he provided benefits to 72 football players and other athletes at miami from 2002 to 2010. those benefits, he says, include sex parties, prostitution, yacht cruises, cash and other gifts. other stars named, the new york giants roll, vince received $50,000 and star kick returner devin hester received cash and jewelry including an engagement ring. the article says shapiro, who some nicknamed lil luke. shapiro started a bounty system against florida and florida state. that's money to take out players on the other team. he put a bounty on tim tebow and offered $5,000 to any player who knocked ricks out of the game. that offer stood for three years. miami new head coach, al goaden who just took over the program said the university should have told him about the investigation if it knew about it, obviously. they open their season september 5th against maryland. that's an ugly story. again, these are allegations. if
