and the nci, national cancer institute's one of them. but the nci is the only institute that has its own separate budget line and also can report directly to the president. it's why the president has the national cancer advisory board, which i was privileged to be appointed to a few months ago. it's a huge problem. and i have some of the numbers here. 40%, that's close to one in two americans will have a diagnosis of some form of cancer. that's huge. in 2016, there will be well over 1.5 mew canew cases, not those have it already, brand-new cases that will be diagnosed. and close to 500,000 people are going to -- excuse me, that breaks down to about 500,000. the mortality, meaning those who are going to die from cancer, is staggering. about almost 600,000 deaths will occur this year from cancer. and that comes to about 171 per 100,000. it is the second most common cause of death, all deaths. so this is a big problem. i'll show you some numbers later on the impact side. children also get cancer, and there will be close to 16,000 new cases.

this is i think a national challenge and it has been addressed by the nci.he disparity in survival rates. put the picture more vivid fashion. this is in women. the lung cancer is just shooting up. this is because of smoking amongst women. when most other cancers are coming down. even breast cancer is coming down. the tobacco problem is still a national problem that should he dealt with. they have been talking about heart disease and emphysema and the other problems associated with smoking. children also get cancer. this is the incidence rate in children. for the different age groups. notice kenya and brain tumors are the number one cancers when you combine them together. ring cancers are next to leukemia in children. cancers are next to leukemia in children. despite that you notice before how many kids survived with leukemia today close to 90% of children will survive leukemia. and they would go on and have their own children and grandchildren. i personally know some kids who were treated successfully as kids and went on to college and are living their lives

and yet we have no attention to this from the -- from the nci, which is the national cancer instituter the nih, and from health and human services. these are the groups that have not been appropriately dealing with this horrible killer. this is the third largest killer of cancer patients. >> when people get this diagnosis, they do think of it as a death sentence because of those statistics you have just laid out. is it just that people have thrown up their hands and they think there's no way to cure this? >> well, you know, it's ironic, but i -- my book is devoted to management. the tenets that aren't here is you need leadership, you need prioritization, and you need urgency. if you're going to succeed. any kind of organization will run into problems, whether it's not-for-profit or for profit. a large organization is when it's a serious problem. they need leadership on it. they have to prioritize what do i have available? how can i put it all together to deal with this? lastly they have to do it immediately. that has not happened in the case of pancreatic cancer. it's a real managemen
