we have a very complex housing finance system without any overall [unintelligible] there is the fha ndie mae. there is the fha and fannie mae. there are freddie -- fannie mae and freddie mac. hybrids, as they were. public shareholders corporations giving a variety of presidential candidates. it came in the conflict in some ways with the private mandate. there are the federal home loan banks that should not be left out. they play an important role in housing finance. many of them will be in agreement with what we just heard from the gentleman from california. what is to figure out the best way to wind down fannie mae and freddie mac. one important job is to decide what goes in their place. when i say this side, much of that will not the government mandated. there will be some role for government agencies figuring out the interaction. who provides liquidity for the secondary mortgage market? is their role for subsidy. -- is there a role for subsidy? because when you put people in deceen conont the problems we have seen of people going inappropriately into homeownership. there are claims

technical and important provisions amendments to the madrid implementation act which congress pass nd 2002. the act is one of the most significant legislative accomplishments in the past 15 years. by way of background, the united states is a signatory to the madrid protocol. international treaty that allowed the trademark owner to seek registration in any of the countries that have joined the protocol. this means an american trademark owner pays the patent and trademark office in alexandria, virginia, a nominal fee to expedite the necessary paperwork overseas. this process makes it easier and less expensive for u.s. trademark owners to acquire protection for their intellectual property in other countries. the 2002 act that implements the protocol has functioned well through the years, but must be updated. the main purpose of the bill is to bring provisions for maintaining extensions of protection under madrid in conformity with provisions for maintaining registrations. maintenance filings with the p.t.o. by the trademark owner are necessary to perpetrate protection of the trademark. t

nd certain the federal agencies would expect more of and expect better of your company. mr.stimony of the 2002 to 2010 camrys linked to unintended acceleration, the unrecalled camrys have twice as many fatal crashes and deaths as those who have been recalled. >> that's correct, senator. >> are you confident with those numbers? >> yes, i am. i expect that the numbers will increase as more investigation is done. we have two other cases right now that we're looking into. >> if mr. ditlow is correct that they're linked to unintended acceleration, if there are twice as many that are not recalled as there are that have been recalled, doesn't that raise real questions about whether the recall is extensive or as extensive as it should have been? >> senator, i'm not personally familiar with that information. i will ask mr. ditlow to look into that. >> if the information is accurate as mr. ditlow has presented it, you would reach the same conclusion that i have reached, that recalling body of automobiles that has only half the rate of fatalities of unintended acceleration is hard lit
