neal karlinsky has the latest. good morning, neal. good morning to you, neal. >> reporter: good morning, josh. overnight, the teacher inside the classroom at the time told abc news she heard a pop and thought it was a balloon going off. she didn't realize the girl was shot until she opened her coat and they saw blood. it happened just before 1:30 in the afternoon, putting the school into an immediate lockdown. >> she had the kids sit underneath, get underneath their desks. make sure the kids were accounted for. >> reporter: minutes later, students were streaming from the school into the arms of worried parents. an 8-year-old student, amina bowman, shot in the abdomen. while simply sitting in her third grade classroom. a family friend says the little girl's mother was in disbelief when the school called. >> she's a sweet little girl. i don't know what to do. >> reporter: bowman was air-lifted to a hospital in seattle. she was rushed into surgery. said to be awake and alert, but critical.

here's abc's neal karlinsky. >> reporter: it was a twisted murder/suicide. two young boys killed at the hands of their father josh powell in a terrifying end to a long and sordid nightmare. >> i was afraid that if he had the chance, the only way he could win this game that he was playing was to kill them. >> reporter: but what happened inside the house before the flames broke out is far more sinister than anyone could have imagined. police say josh powell tried to kill his 7-year-old son charles and 5-year-old braden with a hatchet before the fire could take their lives. >> i don't know if his intent was to try to put them out before the fire got them but he didn't do a very good job of it. >> reporter: josh powell was no stranger to police scrutiny. he was the prime suspect in the disappearance of his wife, susan powell, missing over two years now. just before 12:30 sunday afternoon, the two boys were escorted to josh powell's home by a caseworker for a court-ordered visitation with their father. police say they locked the caseworker out and ignited two fiv

abc's neal karlinsky is in graham, washington, tonight. neal, tell us the latest at this hour. >> reporter: diane, this is a story that has captured the nation's attention for two years. and police say josh powell had been planning this arson for months. ten gallons of gas they say he had inside this home here to make sure it burned to the ground. taking him and the mystery of what he allegedly did to his wife to the grave. chuck and judy cox say they have lost nearly everything. first, their daughter, susan, missing and presumed dead, and now this. their two grandsons, 7-year-old charles and 5-year-old braden, killed, police say, at the hands of their own father. >> he is disturbed. the act is cowardly. >> reporter: what began as a supervised sunday visit quickly turned tragic when josh powell closed the door on the caseworker, locking the children inside. minutes later, the house exploded into flames. police believe powell started the fire with an accelerant after sending an email to his attorney with just three words -- "i'm sorry. good

abc's neal karlinsky has the details from seattle. >> reporter: it was a horrifying turn of events fromarre to sad for years now. police say a caseworker had just dropped off powell's two young sons south of seattle when powell locked the door keeping the caseworker out. moments later there was a smell of gas. the caseworker stepped back and the house exploded into. flames. powell was the of interest in the disappearance of his wife susan in 2009. did you kill your wife? >> no. >> did you have anything to do with the disappearance of your wife? >> no. >> nothing? >> nothing. >> reporter: the kids were taken from him in the wake of the inv up allegations of child pornography related to josh's father. the explosion comes less than a week after a judge ordered josh to undergo a psychiatric ev evaluation before custody arrangements could be made. his strange relath his wife's family has sometimes boiled over. >> how is it helping? >> how is it helping to find susan? >> reporter: susan powell was reported missing in december 2009. josh powell told police he last saw her around midnight, when
