neal karlinsky near rattlesnake, washington. neal. >> reporter: david, good evening, what an incredible standoff out here. it's all playing out deep in the woods about a mile from this police check point. that is where they say they found the suspect hidden inside what they're calling a very sophisticated and well fortified bunker. the terrain was so rugged police helicopters made 40 trips to drop s.w.a.t team members in by rope. from every side they approached and fired tear gas into the homemade bunker looking for 41-year-old peter keller, believed to be heavily armed and hunkered down with a gas mask, booby trap and supplies deep inside. by this morning they decided to blow the roof to the bunker's entrance. that's when they found his body on the ground. >> they have seen within a dead body, again with a great deal of blood around it. >> reporter: keller was wanted for the murders of his wife, lynnette and 18-year-old daughter. both were found shot to death in the family home a week ago when the house was set on fire. keller a

neal karlinsky is on the story. >> reporter: it was a manhunt straight out of a movie. this is police video of s.w.a.t. teams being lowered into the woods by helicopter, chasing down a suspect holed up in a bunker filled with ammo, multiple rooms, even cement reinforced walls. police moved in saturday morning and blew a portion of the roof over the entrance open. finding 41-year-old peter keller dead on the ground inside. >> there's a dead body inside. it appears to have been dead for some time. there's a pistol nearby and a great deal of blood. >> reporter: keller was a wanted man, accused of killing his wife and 18-year-old daughter last week before setting the family home ablaze and taking off for the woods. a co-worker said he showed no signs of violence but mentioned something about the end of the world recently. >> we're utterly blown away. >> reporter: police say he took eight years toil to build this place. look at the hatch, barely visible on the ground. police say finding the bunker was like a needle in a haystack. the woods are incredibly thick. they can't fi

abc's neal karlinsky is in seattle with the latest. orning, neal. >> reporter: george, good morning. this is one of the cases where a family waited and waited and refused to give up hope. now, after more than six years, cold case unit detectives reopened the case, found fresh evidence. and now, they have a suspect behind bars. >> look at that beautiful girl. >> reporter: it began like so many missing cases. a family's plea for help. a young woman, 32-year-old nicole pets, suddenly vanished. her husband told reporters she was simply gone. >> focusing on finding her so you don't let your mind go to the bad places. >> reporter: but within days, nicole's naked body was found dumped in a wooded area. police have few clues. the news media moved on. the case was all but forgotten. at least that's what people thought. but police never bought the husband's story. now, six years later, he's being charged with nicole's murder. >> i think he deserves an academy award. he had us convinced. i've gone to prison and called him a murderer. i say, how do

and abc's neal karlinsky starts us off from tucson, this morning. . >> reporter: george, good morning. the police presence is much smaller this morning. police seem to have hit a wall in this case. the family, now, is allowed to return to their home, which is just over the wall over there. but they remain out of sight. they grabbed a few things overnight. they've decided to move on and stay elsewhere. police are now souring hours of surveillance camera footage, including footage taken from this camera, that points towards the family home from 75 yards away. and video from other nearby stores for any sign of 6-year-old isabel celis. emily collins say isabel's brother walked into the store where she walks alone, and searching. >> he came in and he asked, did you hear anything? we were all sleeping. and you know, we didn't hear anything. i said, no, she's gone. >> reporter: with the search winding down, investigators are focusing on witnesses. abc news obtained this police questionnaire detectives are using to interview neighbors. asking them if they ha

neal karlinsky is in tucson with the latest. good morning, neal. >> reporter: good morning.o set the scene here, police are here because the family home is just on the other side of the wall over there. the family is now out of that house, an active crime scene at the center of a very puzzling case. the search for 6-year-old isabel celis has broadened to include tucson's landfill, and a more rigorous search of the family home, where police have secured a search warrant and moved the family out, after a specially-trained fbi dog hit on something inside. >> the dogs d s did alert on a things. we're trying to determine. >> reporter: for the second time since saturday, police closed off, not just the family home, but a chunk of the entire block. this neighbor told us, he is keeping his own kids locked up for their safety. >> it could have been our kids. >> you can come back to our house and search it 100 times. >> reporter: several neighbors have had their homes searched. but this man raised a point we hadn't heard before, which police confirmed to abc news. the family has dogs.
