for six years i was the governor of nebraska. when senator fischer was elected to the unicameral i was actually coming to washington to be secretary of agriculture, so we did work together, but we both worked in the same system. i would like to get a legislative perspective about how the nebraska aoupb -- unicamera works. i saw it from the governors office but i wasn't on the floor every day. that is not typically what a governor would do is go to the floor every day. nebraska is a pretty republican state. i think we all recognize that. we know that. it is a nonpartisan unicameral, so not only is it a one-house system, but the senators don't run as republicans or democrats. they run on a nonpartisan ticket. now i would also say that our voter registration in nebraska is public record. so, of course, the media, when we would run for office would always look at where we were registered, or they would ask us. and i don't remember a time, maybe there was a time but i don't remember a time where democrats had a majority in the unicame

let me explain what has happened in nebraska. osha targeted a family farm in rural nebraska that grows corn and soybeans and raises cattle. this farm has one nonfarm -- or nonfamily employee on that farm. in other words, it's a very typical nebraska farm, just the kind of farm congress envisioned in creating the exemption dating back to 1976. osha ignored what congress directed. they ignored the law exempting farms and slapped this family farm with fines totaling more than $130,000. osha accused the farmer of willful violations. let me give you a couple of examples. failure to conduct atmospheric tests in a grain bin. failure to wear osha-approved gear when entering a grain bin, just to name a few. madam president, you can't make this stuff up. i kid you not. the violations i listed were $28,000 each, with a long list of lesser violations piled on top. they threw the book at this farmer. let me be clear that osha made no claim that anyone had been hurt. they claimed only that the farm failed to comply with the osha manual. i'm su

it's not just alaska facing this, but it's montana and nebraska and south dakota. in your book, you talk about the consolidation of schools, and when that happens, there's always a winner and there's always a loser. what's happening 1, 2, 5 years down the road to the towns on the losing end of that deal? >> the towns on the losing end of the dal, som deal, some of tl media comments, if you lose your school, the parents with school-aged children have to leave or find alternatives, most of them leave, it's going to erode your tax base, and your average age is going to increase. and that's one of the issues in america, losing population, and more deaths than births, and the age goes up. so there's a cascading affect, with a balanced population, with enough young people who are raising families can't survive. and without the schools, there's no reason to stay. so there's always a winner and always a loser when there's consolidation. and the losers are maybe a decade, and maybe a little bit more from not being a town anymore. >> darius, you actually moved your family fr
