lincoln. of course, the namesake of nebraska's capitol city. the statue was created on labor day 1912 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of lincoln's birth, which had passed a year or so before. in that commemoration the city of lincoln along with people across the state raised the sum of money to build this memorial and in the process, they commissioned an artist by the name of daniel chester french. well, french became rather renowned nationally and internationally for his images of abram lincoln -- abraham lincoln as memorials. however, this particular statue behind me was the first one french had ever done, was considered the high water mark of his career at the time he achieved it, and he was so successful at lincoln memorials he was commissioned to do the one on the national mall the same year we started building this building, which was 10 years after the memorial was put in place. and the man who designed the colonnaded white marble building that houses the lincoln memorial in washington, d.c. is the same man who designed the backdrop

if they are handed a ticket to lincoln, nebraska that is where they come. so people land where they are sent. not only do they get no help from the federal government. but they actually have to pay the money for the plane ticket back. as soon as they get a job and make money the wages are gar garnished. if you think about a family speaking no english coming from sudan with four children that is $8,000 in debt before getting off the plane they have to deal with. so the people who had help them are local community service agencies or church groups. the catholic social services has been very important here. lutheran family services have been important here. one of the arguments i make is that every refugee that comes here needs a cultural broker and that is a person that can help them deal with our complicated technology culture. i did this work in 1999-2000 and lincoln nebraska had 54 languages in our public schools. we had people coming from all over the world. my background is in psychology but i got really interested in working with this population because

[video clip] >> one of the things that makes a building unique is the fact that we have this amazing collection of materials that documents the construction of the building. we have here artwork that was created during the design of the rotunda floor for the building. the designs for the rotunda floor show mother earth and the four elements of water air fire and earth. the designs sheet created, for the most part, were used as she created them, with the exception of mother earth. in the final floor, the design is very different. mother earth is seated in a throne, there are children around her. she not only created these small pieces to show the commission when she was thinking of doing but she also created a full-scale figure to show them this is what the mosaic would look like on the floor of the rotunda. host: it is a gorgeous building. you can learn m
