we welcome exclusive interview the governor of connecticut, ned lamont. thank you for joining us. give us a sense of where the disease is in your state and what you need to see to relieve some of those restrictions? gov. lamont: nice to be with you. connecticut got pretty hurt. we were right next to new york city, which was the wuhan province of the pandemic in the united states. now it is six weeks later. all of those curves are bending in the right direction. we have extra hospitalization capacity, which was the key metric. we are finally getting the ppe. we delivered it ourselves, bought it from china great complicated process. we have testing ready to go. these are the key metrics we need to give people confidence we can begin to reopen on may 20. david: can you give us any sense of the distribution across the state? i mean socioeconomic but also geographic. we see differences in some states. new york is a larger geographic state. there will be differences in the reopening. will that apply to connecticut? gov. lamont: first of all, we were hit in different ways in different reg

for now i'm joined by governor ned lamont. thank you for joining us. want to start with a point made by one of our guests in the last month, dr. david shulkin said in his estimation only two states in the country right now that have the testing capacity necessary to begin reopening and that was rhode island and north dakota. i know you have seen a significant drop in cases here, but from a testing standpoint are you confident you're at the capacity you need to be to begin the reopening process? >> hi, steve. i'm confident. we doubled the amount of testing in the last week, we'll double it again in the next week, we're able to go after every single first responder, everybody in our nursing homes, we're testing in the door to the factories. everyone who's going in and out have been tested and they're safe. may 20th, making sure we have the protective gear in place, we have the testing in place and the track trace. >> so may 20th, you're saying this is phase one of the reopening. let me ask it this way, on may 20th, what still can't open in connecticut? >

ned lamont thinks forcing nursing homes to take covid positive patients as most states are doing is a path to disaster. >> i'm terrified. >> reporter: covid only facilities are governor lamont's solution this was a 90-bed nursing home until it shut down last november covid only facility. >> connecticut deserves a lot of credit they're testing everyone, staff and residents. they're providing personal protective equipment for the staff and then finally creating these specialized covid facilities. >> reporter: over the weekend, new york's governor cuomo reversed the rule to take back covid patients and that have facilities like this one on stand by back in connecticut the national guard is lending a hand like most of the country, connecticut struggled with the shortage of ppe, especially for nursing homeworkers. some daunting trash bags to protect themselves governor cuomo said it's not him to provide ppe. >> in a crisis, the buck stops here these nurses homes are private enterprises, why didn't they take care of their people forget it. we're in a crisis. >> reporter: here they tell us t

. >> governor ned lamont, thank you for joining us. i want to get your reaction. the president said he's taking hydroxychloroquine which has potentially side effects. would you tell your residents to follow his example? >> no. i would tell them to wear a surgical mask and i would tell the president, you want a line of defense that works, try a surgical mask. >> let me get your thoughts on this claim when it comes to the critical issue of testing. >> when we have a lot of cases, i don't look at that as a bad thing. in a certain respect it is a good thing because it means our testing is much better. if we were testing a million people instead of 14 million people, we would have far fewer cases, right? i view it as a badge of honor. really, it's a badge of honor. a great tribute to the testing and all of the work the professionals have done. >> governor, what is your response to that? >> i think what he means to say is the number of infections is a percentage of infections to the number of testing. we are now down less than 10%. that's a big plus. about a month or so

joining us now, the governor of connecticut, ned lamont. governor, thank you so much for joining us. i know you've been in touch with vice president mike pence and the rest of the coronavirus task force throughout this crisis. should the white house be talking about shutting down the task force by the end of this month? clearly deaths are still climbing. >> it seems a little weird that just a couple of days ago the president was at the lincoln memorial, doubling the estimates for the number of people who were going to die, given the covid crisis, then a day later says we may wind down the pence task force. it doesn't make any sense to me. i think we need more federal direction. i think we need federal direction in terms of not only getting the gear we need, but also direction in terms of all the different protocols for different businesses as they reopen. i think dr. fauci and dr. birx can be very helpful there. i don't want to see them go. >> are you concerned that shutting down the task force, governor, could send the wrong message to the

getting a 17-page report and shutting it down and not distributing it to governors like governor ned lamont of connecticut who told my colleague john berman it would be helpful in making these zigszigs decisions. what are the ramifications of that? >> poppy our states look to the cdc for public health guidance. that's the purpose of the cdc. it creates general guidelines and messaging that states across the country can roll out. both to judge hwhen it is safe o reopen and stay in contact with their citizens to help them understand what the next steps are, what to expect, et cetera. having the cdc guidance shutdown is unprecedented. and it is going to have really negative ramifications for states across the country. already hearing from people they're feeling fatigued and not understanding what it is that they're supposed to do. the cdc does a good job on messaging and now states are not going to have access to that scientific guidance. i am disappointed and angry this has happened. >> yeah. okay. so let's talk about some of the medical developments that we have been learning about. i want t

today in connecticut, the democratic governor there ned lamont fired the state commissioner blaming her for connecticut being too slow to address the virus in nursing homes in that state. in connecticut, nearly 60% of the coronavirus deaths in the case happened in nursing homes. connecticut is not alone there. they're one of more than a dozen states where a majority of deaths have been nursing home deaths. but this is the first state that i know of where they fired the state health director for it. the governor says he wants every nursing home resident tested. they're also moving to set up covid only nursing homes in connecticut, presumably to move positive patients so they can more easily separate nursing home residents with the virus from nursing home residents who don't have to try to get a late handle on what has been a very, very deadly epidemic in that part of connecticut. wait too late. hundreds of nursing home deaths in that state already. but as we say basically every day in the failed response to this epidemic in this country, yesterday would have been better than today, but t
