neda told me about 5 a.m. these waves were peaking at 15 to 18 feet. that's nothing compared to mavericks with 20 to 24-foot waves right now. they are powerful and dangerous. a high surf warning is in effect including santa cruz. so that means waters are very treacherous and battering waves will pound the shoreline up and down the coast all day long. this will result in deadly rip currents. already there have been several rescues along the coast because the action going on in the ocean right now. and officials are continuing to urge people to stay out of the water because of all the high risks involved. >> i got swept probably a mile, mile and a half down the beach before i decided to turn around and try to make it back up to capitola. >> less surfers, it's fun. >> reporter: a strong system is causing the ocean to churn a westerly, as well. waves will be calm when they are about 15 feet. that will be about 10 p.m. in pacifica, jackie ward, kpix 5 . >>> jaclyn dunn is tracking the roads. >> it's slow out there. especially for drivers along interstate 80

meteorologist neda iranpour is tracking the rain. >> it's arrived just in time for the lunch hour across the north bay. so yes, they are getting wet across places just north of santa rosa. so let me zoom in and show you where. strong cells in the area at a quarter inch per hour. so dillon beach you just saw a cell come through and move to tomales, bodega bay over you for the past 30 minutes. light rain right now in santa rosa, rohnert park and oakmont. so the north bay just as expected getting rain at this hour and then here's what's to come. as we set this in motion, by 2 p.m. san francisco will see more, redwood city will see more. 4:00, widespread showers. that afternoon commute will be wet. and it's coming down pretty heavily. we have been seeing it hanging over northern california pretty much all morning before it reached the north bay. be it has been a slow system which means that more rain could be coming. there will be a wet afternoon commute and snow in the sierra coming up. >>> bay area officials are preparing for i.c.e. raids and there is a new plan that may protect undocument

neda is on storm watch. >> i sure am. hi-def doppler all lit up. we are seeing widespread rainfall as expected for your wednesday. taking a look now at some of the areas where the heavy rain is coming down, to the south bay we go. look at san jose. right now, getting about a half inch of rain per hour. the areas of orange seeing some significant rainfall rates as this storm moves from the coast into the inland areas. we're watching it get heavier and heavier. and now we're looking at just past fremont, heading further out east towards sunol, pleasanton also seeing some good amount of rain coming down right along highway 680. san ramon, danville, the cell is building. same with dublin. it is a lot lighter, though, for san francisco. daly city, some light rain and barely a drizzle there across downtown. but people are using their umbrellas across the downtown area. you're going to want that today especially for the afternoon commute. here we are going further north. you can see more of that rain hitting interstate 80 there. so it will be slick out on

that's all coming up. >>> neda, thank you t overnight on the east coast, the -- thank you. overnight on the east coast, there was a bomb cyclone bringing with it snow and ice and strong winds. officials say schools in major cities are closed while boston and other parts of new england should get the brunt of the storm. forecasters expect over a foot of snow with winds up to 75 miles an hour. the winter storm brought snow and ice to the southeast for the first time in decades. omar villafranca reports from virginia, where power is out for thousands of customers. >> reporter: it started snowing in norfolk, virginia, at about 10:00 last night. and it really hasn't let up. the snow is starting to get up to my shoes right now. the city of norfolk usually gets about 7" of snow per season. but if all the predictions are correct, they could get up to 10" of snow and that would be the 8th largest snowfall total on record for the city. another big issue here is the wind. some gusts are up to 60 miles per hour. overnight this storm caused a major headache on interstate 264. some drive
