[laughter] that is it for our time. thank you for being a guest on "newsmakers." neera: thank you so much for having me. susan: "newsmakers" is back after our conversation with neera tanden. our two reporters, jerry seib and darlene superville. darlene, before we get into a discussion of the elections, you spent a lot of time at the white house. what is that mood after the week we had just gone through? darlene: the mood is a little bit subdued. although it was an extraordinary week, there have been a lot of weeks like this at the white house. the president is obviously frustrated. there is a feeling that the walls are kind of closing in with associates left and right seemingly turning on him and being willing to talk to the feds about what they know. but it is kind of a subdued mood. we had one breaking this week with sarah sanders that was a little bit contentious, but that was it. susan: the president

neera: there are two issues at play. those cases see the idea of a culture of corruption in washington. democrats have been talking about the challenge of corruption. we have these 2 incidents with the news around duncan hunter and chris collins, members of the house of representatives, and died of for self-stealing as part of being members of congress. that paints a picture of the swamp invading washington. the public rightly feels that people are helping themselves, public.ing the i also think this is connected strongly to the russia investigation at large. a situation in which news seems to be getting closer to the president. candidates i think, should talk about what is happening in washington. the russia investigation is about what happened with our democracy. it is vital. the mueller investigation seems to be picking up speed. jerry: in the broader public conversation, the manafort and have broughtments forth talks of impeachment. could there be one at the end of this investigative road? is it useful for democrats

. >>> we're back with our live panel, steve schmidt, neera tanden and jason johnson.view with steve bannon. his defense on charlottesville? >> yeah, i think he's -- his statements are just reprehensible and as you point out in the interview, i just need to say again, one person died here in charlottesville, her name was heather heyer, the president never talked about her, never discussed her, steve bannon still trying to equate antifa with the people who came in, initiated the whole thing, announced over and over statements like "jews will not replace us," racist, virulently anti-semitic remarks and still steve bannon, who was the adviser to the president and probably fuelled his racist remarks at the time and i believe it is racist to equate these groups. i will also make a side note. on the mueller investigation, steve bannon said at the time there's no way donald trump didn't tell -- donald trump jr. didn't tell donald trump his dad about that meeting but now when he's trying to raise money from millions of people to support donald trump he's saying oh, yeah, no, d

neera, i'm going to start with you. does she -- does she hurt the party's chances to have a big election, and should that matter? >> i think the challenge is that every race we are looking at so far are ruby red districts, right? so we're talking about a republican plus 11. >> like ohio 12. >> these are not -- if danny o'connor won, there's 70 districts to the left of him that are better for democrats. and so that's the challenge she's looking at, right? it's like you're in these super republican districts. republicans are using these arguments against her in these incredibly conservative districts. i do not think it will be the same in other locations. i don't think it's the same in swing districts or much more swing districts. and i think the issue here really is republicans said that they were going to campaign on the tax cut. that didn't work. they obviously can't campaign on the health care bill. that's a disaster for them. so they're going back to the pelosi playbook to basically make the race as partisan as possi
