[laughter] it was the 1990s, i was approached by columbia university press to write a chapter in an encyclopedia they were preparing to celebrate the end of the 20th century. and it was called, quite simply, the columbia history of the 20th century. and i might even have it here. this was it, okay? now, what's significant about it is the person originally scheduled to write that -- i was approached in 1996. the person originally scheduled to write that was carol s -- carl sagan. he had been asked to contribute a chapter to that volume. he had been ill, he died in 1996. my name was put up as one who would then write in his stead. and i was honored to be aske
