what is a cosmic perspective, neil degrasse tyson? >> neil: it changes you.everybody's arguing about, it's what that looks like when you ascend and look back on earth. and think about it. when we went to the moon -- forget the geopolitics of it -- yes, we went to the moon to explore the moon. and look back over our shoulders and we discovered earth for the first time. there was earth and all its majesty without the color-coded countries we were trained on an elementary school so that you know who your friends are and who your enemies are. think about how inculcating that is in an educational trajectory. so here you are, there's earth, as nature intends you to see. with oceans, land, clouds. that changes you. in fact, by the way, we went there in 1969. stopped going in '72. you know what happened over those three years? we created the environmental protection agency, the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, noaa, the first earth day. all of that happened in that three-year period. there was a firmware upgrade. >> stephen: and our perception? >> nei

out front now, neil degrasse tyson.il, obviously i relish all of our conversations. so, you've got this asteroid, and, you know, it's incredible, all the math of it. we get on there, you get a little piece of rock, and they brought it home. so, what can a scientist actually learn from this 4.5 billion-year-old rock that's about to land in utah? >> well, what we don't know for sure, when you think we would, but we just don't, is what's the structural integrity of asteroids? only recently, in recent decades, did we learn some of them might be rubble piles gathered together that are masquerading as a solid object. others are loosely held together. this matters because if you want to deflect an asteroid that might be headed your way and you nudge one part of it and it doesn't have the structural integrity to stay together, you can end up breaking off a piece and your mission would then fail. so, by looking at what the material contents of binu is through this example return -- which, by the way, we just have to pray that th

let's bring in world renowned astrophysicist neil degrasse tyson. just this month. looks like another great book, as always. appreciate you coming on. how amazing was this, what nasa pulled off today? >> i like to think of the big picture. first, credit goes to the engineers. scientists all through out this, but engineers made it work. not enough hat tipping goes to the engineers. we launch a space probe from earth. itself a moving platform, to intersect an astroid, itself a moving target. it then touches -- does a touch and go off that astroid surface and grabbing anything it could when it hit. we expect maybe a couple of ounces, but it got half a pound of material got krabd up into the capsule. then that continued on to re-enter sect earth, deploy that capsule, and then it kept going and it's on to another astroid. so, yes, it is rocket science. yes, it's a brilliant feat. i look forward to more of this in the future. >> absolutely. what are we hoping to learn from all of this? there's a long way to go, a complicated mission. there's got to be a g
