. >> neil: the last guy to grab any substantial votes was ross perot, 19%. he didn't get one electoral vote. george wallaceped it to richard nixon back then because he took them from hubert humphrey. when you get a lot of votes, you take them away from someone else. isn't that what this comes down to? >> well, we're not going to give our alliance to a ticket if we think they're going to be spoilers. our polling -- we're doing a lot of polling says that a bipartisan unity ticket would take from both parties and particularly from a lot of registered independents, which is by far the largest group of voters in america. you said something important, neil, which most people don't know, which is every state but maine and nebraska gives their electoral votes to the ticket with the most votes. that means that if you're in a three or four or five-way race, you get a third of the votes or a little more, you have the electoral vote. that's one of the judgments we're going to make. we think a strong bipartisan ticket could get elected this year. >> neil: we'll watch closely, senator. good seeing you. thanks very much.
