and kathmandu region, which is the capital of nepal.s the most recent information from the u.s. geological survey. 7.2 magnitude, we hear reports of two consecutive earthquakes, about 35 minutes separate from each other. of course, the second one slightly weaker. is this would be an aftershock or a tremor from the first main earthquake, which is provided in this information. it is about several different reports, anywhere from ten or 12 kilometers deep, this is significant because the more shallow an earthquake the more shaking you will feel at the surface of the earth. so going forward, this is going to be a concern, obviously, there is going to be some destabilized buildings and structures, people need to be aware that aftershocks and tremors are still possible going forward especially with an earthquake of this magnitude. this is from the usgs, the u.s. geological survey, this is what is called a shake map, this is difficult to see, a lot of information coming to us as we speak, social media and the internet. we're starting to see th

the difficulty therefore is not relief material reaching nepal, the difficulty is they'll reach nepal, but from the airport. other points of collection to get it out to other people. women, elderly, children food, water, tents, milk and so on. that's a major problem after the first priority which is to save lives, many who are still maybe alive under the rubble and the debris. that is the difficult situation that you are facing. you point out some of the big challenges as you say facing the nepalese authorities. india says it will play sa crucial role in getting help to nepal. help us through what you are hearing that india is prepared to give, and how soon are they getting that aid to the nepalese. >> well on both counts as far as india's aid is concerned, it's a given. apart from the people of nepal themselves and the government of nepal, most of the relief and counter crisis has to come from india. there's 1900km of an open border. nepal is there on the north of india. and a number of other countries offered aid and are providing fund and material. the relief effort tackling the cr

you're watching cnn and we have to begin with nepal. nepal is in survival mode. people are still trapped under piles of debris two days after this 7.8 magnitude quake absolutely flattened mass civilian parts of this country and surrounding areas and shifted its capital ten feet. a little boy is found alive underneath this building that crumbled on top of him. you heard the cheers of celebrations here as this man is pulled out alive. this is 48 hours after he was buried. for every one of these scenes every one of these survival tales there's more and more bodies. right now almost 4,000 people are known to be dead. but with many remote villages still unreachable including the epicenter there, the number of victims is expected to surge. and so is the humanitarian crisis here. nepal already one of the poorest nations in the entire world is overflowing with the injured and medical supplies. they are dwindling and dwindling very quickly, as in wood to burn the bodies to cremeat these bodies. many people are living outside huddled in tents. these people terrified, these

we begin with the latest from a ravished nepal. the death toll from the earthquake now passed 2,500. that number is expected to rise as rescue and recovery efforts continue through the night. basic supplies such as food, water, tents, blanketed and medicines are being delivered from the u.s. india and china. hospitals are overflowing. an untold number of people are missing. yesterday's 7.8 earthquake hit near the capital kathmandu. this morning a 6.7 aftershock was entered closer to mt. everest. climbers there say the aftershock set off fresh avalanches. the number of the dead on the mountain has risen to at least 17 including three americans, one of whom is a google executive. cnn correspondent is in india for us not far from the border of nepal. there was a big aftershock. did that create greater concern there? >> reporter: absolutely. the aftershock today 6.7 on the richter scale. that in itself qualifies as a pretty large earthquake. that did cause a lot of fear in nepal again and a lot of destruction and certainly slowed down
