so signs of possible structural damage, as a nert team, you have to be able to identify buildings. you have to be able, during a disaster, especially an earthquake, walk down the street and be able to look at buildings and understand this building is okay, this building is bad. as you walk down the street. especially if you are going to go into that building. things to look for, horizontal and vertical lines. in this room, most construction works at 90 degree angles. if you look around the room, this beam is a little bit curved. but where the beam meets the wall, it hits at a 90 degree angle. basically makes a vertical and horizontal line. you want to look for these things when you look at a building. and it's not always obvious . if you look at this building, this one was an example of the racking we talked about. see how these studs are starting to fold on each other? if this whole thing fell over, the studs would be connected to each other. this is an example of the racking. obvious example of racking here; right? if you walk into this building, you are going to say this is heav

we are trying to start a team nert training program in the high schools. the health and science requirement is somewhat of a fit but whenever you add something to the school curriculum you take something away it's an about the of a bit and take. lincoln and washington high school are the 2 high schools that have hosted nert for their high school students. >> if you are parents or have connections with schools talk to the principals and school board and advocate for preparedness. if we get third graders trained they will go home and say where's our water. do we know how to turn off the gas or where will we meet. be the voice if promoting that in the schools. we have the information available we need help getting in the door. >> one more thing is many of the nert cites are rec and park cites. we have an emergency permit on file with rec and park for use of the cites. >> and in terms of rec and park most of the rec and park employees have gone through or going through training through the red cross. they are tied in to this they are a very strong partner. >>

the team aspect of nert really is the community. keep that in mind today as we are all talking. >> jamie. >> hi. i'm jamie lopez. i'm the nert coordinator for hay hayes valley. before i start off on my rant i wanted to acknowledge most of what i will talk about was built and developed with a neighboring coordinator in the lower hate who was at the morning session but not here today. anything i say give her equal credit for what works and doesn't work. so i'm going to start from the assumption that you have some training or you will begin out reach in your neighborhood. for us where that started was at a basis of 0. there was no active coordinator in the neighborhood at the time. we decided to take it on. so our first priority was justifying a way of getting the information out. how do we connect with people in the neighborhood? where are the places we can go? what are the resources that already exist? we started with the farmers market. getting a free table from the guy who organized it and giving out information. that lead to other

little uncomfortable and he's not going to stay in this position, so since you're nert people and you always work in teams and you always have your manual with you and two or thre manuals and slide them under hi shoulders, or you could take a shoe off and put it under the shoulders and make its so the head flops back a little bit an keeps the air way open and whil you attend to this and he's bleeding and not breathing and now he's bleeding. so direct pressure. still bleeding -- put another dressing on and you can hold it in place with a bandage and if he wakes up hold on to this or you're going to die. he tends to hold on nice and tight and it's still bleeding. well, let's find this pulse point in here and we will push against the bone there and it will slow the blood and it's al good and bleeding stopped and hold on to that for a while and make sure the bleeding doesn't reoccur, and this guy
