the figures show that the netherlands, cycling in the netherlands is the safest transport mode in europe. if you compare to it, for example, italy, which is very dangerous for cyclists. we do fairly well. the explanation is, to my opinion, in the fact that we call safety by numbers. the more you get, the safer it is. and i'll show you the next slide to prove that. this is the bike share in the u. where the netherlands is extreme left and the u.k. is extreme right. and third is italy, for example. denmark is second next to the netherlands. if you compare that with safety numbers, you see that in the netherlands, where we cycle a lot, not too many people on bikes got killed and it's just the other way around in it italy and the u.k. where people do not cycle but get killed if they cycle. and somebody can come up with the arguments that we have a lot of good bicycle infrastructure in the netherlands. that's true, but in england they are building a lot of bicycle infrastructure as well, but they do not get the people on the bikes, so for them that go it's still very dangerous. it's not only

here is a picture taken in the south of netherlands. here, the layout is so much that you are really regarded as cyclists that they have made space for you. the cars know that cyclists have priority. this is a common roundabout situation in the netherlands, also in the village where i live. so this shows that you go for the cyclists. go for cyclists and realize when someone is saying we were cramped in space like in san francisco, we say, well, you have never been to any dutch town because your roads are so wide. and then they think, yeah, but all these lanes are needed for car traffic. i'll tell you, if you use this traffic model, you should realize that the capacity of your system is not determined by the amount of lanes and the stretches of roads but by the capacity of intersections and you realize that the capacity of these intersections are a lot lower than any capacity of lanes that are on the stretches of roads. so it's only a parking place for cars on to the next traffic light or intersection. so it's only convincing the people

i think that is a very good rule in the netherlands. i think cyclists should also be aware of how vulnerable they are, and they should take care of the rules that apply to them. it is not a pedestrian on wheels, they do not allow on the sidewalks, facilities need to be tailor-made. i don't copy all of the things that are in the book. keep in mind that you want to plan for san francisco, and that san franciscans have to deal with it. but look to it for inspiration. inhibit is not just a sport, it is a mode of transport. the bicycle is not the poor man's mercedes. i want to end my presentation with this picture that i love to show. it is our former queen, her present queen, and future queen on bicycles. . >> the towns in the netherlands have the highest rate of bicycle use. also, in denmark. ithey have all the facilities ad priorities for bicycles. it turns out that these towns have a lot higher bicycle use than elsewhere. it pays to have good bicycle facilities. >> yes, i have another question. this is more on the cost and maintenance. one thing that plagues american cities is the maintenance budget for maintaining public streets and public right of ways. we know very well that you have very high taxes and you have very high parking fees. could you talk about who and how you maintain your infrastructure and the streets? is that just a given, you decide to build something and somebody maintains it, or is there an agreement with another department to maintain it? >> the authorities in amsterdam, the infrastructure and transport department and municipalities, they financed it, they planned it, they build it, construct it, and they maintain it. i think that is the logical route. and is paid by the community's -- and is paid by the communit ies, and also from the state depart

in the netherlands, people who come to work by bike are more regarded them by car. the people who use the car have to find excuses why they still use the car. they just come and say, i just want to go by car. and the fact is, more and more people -- for instance, in amsterdam, by having this past and so on, 9000 people per day choose not to have their car because there was no more accessibility by car but choose the alternatives. 15% of them stay with the alternatives. they had a car. when they experienced it, it was not so bad commuting by bike or public transport, then there were convinced also. -- then it they were convinced also. if you tell people who drive by cars, and i think american politicians are so afraid they might lose voters, but if you keep telling them the detriment of the effects of using their car every day -- what? but they will not mind losing voters. my friends and the businessmen and area, they don't mind. for the around children, -- for their own children, but is it faster, more convenient, and cheaper? those are the reasons why you will choo

i had an opportunity a year ago with many of the folks who are in this room to travel to the netherlandsnd spend a week. we went to four different cities and it was an opportunity to study the transportation infrastructure in the netherlands and to basically try to learn how have they done it? how have they gotten so many people onto their bicycles? one day we were riding around amsterdam, it was towards the end of the week and we were being toured around by a gentleman from amsterdam and we were driving around on our bikes and it's this beautiful, beautiful stifle. beautiful brick buildings, the canals, bicycles everywhere and he said as we were riding a simple kind of thing. he said imagine all these bicycles that you see. imagine if they were all cars. it was a very kind of simple but profound statement. the entire character of amsterdam would be completely different. it would really be ruined in my estimation. it would be clogged with traffic and noise. the air would be polluted. everybody would probably be fatter and it just -- it wouldn't be -- it's part of what has enabled amsterd

with howard gorges temperate climate, we are several steps ahead of the netherlands and where we can go when bicycling. what i learned most of all is what i think many of us already know. when you build it, they come. when the government has done, what the community has done is invested in great bikeways. when you create a dedicated to save space, this man and his kids ride. this woman and her dog variety. this man and his daughters ride. this man and his daughter ride. there is one on the back, you can barely see her foot sticking out. it was difficult to not get photos of multiple children on bikes. three people with kids loaded on the bikes. grandparents picking their kids up from school, their grand kids from school. this is a typical traffic jam outside of the school. we struggle with traffic congestion in our city, this was the traffic jam outside of a local amsterdam school. they have made investments, they have seen the fruits of that labor payoffs. again, even in the snow, even when the little hills were a little bit slippery, they pushed that have the bike up the hill. beca

also, in the netherlands, we're not so good with racing cyclists.all the champions from last year are from italy, spain, or your country, never from the netherlands. but cycling is more than racing, it is a way of transport. especially for the first 7 kilometers, in combination with public transport. the last lines are important. for instance, in at the city of amsterdam, 85% of the trips are faster by bike then by car -- then by car. i do everything by bicycle. i am a slow cyclist, and i am still faster through the city. that is why most of the people in amsterdam go by bike. if your interested in funny and nice invidious, go to youtube. but you will see a lot of videos in which the bicycle and the car cooperate. these are some pictures and examples of how the public authorities can invest in cycling. this is a parking space for a cyclist. tend thousand bicycles can be stored there. -- 10,000 bicycles can be stored there. you can build a shelter for about 30,000 bicycles. now, what can employees do? many employees are working on the bicycle program
