nevada.e governor and i worked hard to work out the consent to allow integration in the gaming community of nevada. moving forward, i am very aware of the fact that the first african-american to serve on the federal court in the state of nevada was a direct result of the work i did. i got a call last night, it was late, i was surprised, from secretary ken salazar. he told me to make sure that you tell everybody you have been more diverse in the united states senate than anyone else put together. that is where we are and i will move forward and get health care done the next couple of weeks. >> you apologized to president barack obama and black leaders. what about of butter is? do you think you owe them an apology? -- what about the voters? >> i talked to the national leaders in the last few days. the african american leaders in nevada, i told them just to call me. the present majority leader of the senate in nevada is one of my proteges. i am very proud of him. i am not going to dwell on this

battle this election year, 2010, to keep his seat, and just today, a new poll in his home state of nevadae out showing he is -- just pretty much not well liked, his favorability ratings, meaning how much people like him are low. the problem for him back home, is that people know him very well, they know him, and the majority don't like him. and he trails three potential republican candidates, the biggest problem for him is that he's already been fighting for his political life to win his seat again in the senate, and this is just another -- in the words of one of his supporters, i just got an e-mail, it's another straw to break the camel's back. >> dana, stay with us, we may come back do you in a moment. president obama was quick to respond to senator reid's apology. the white house issued this statement, harry reid called me today and apologized for an unfortunate comment reported today. i accepted harry's apology without question, because i've known him for years, i've seen the passionate leadership he's shown on social justice. as far as i am concerned, the book is closed. that stateme

he already faces a tough re-election in his home state of nevada. and now revelations about some private comments he made about president obama's race during the campaign are causing a stir. more now from nbc's mike vacara. >> reporter: leading up to the election in 2008, harry reid, leading senate democrat and vital obama ally made a case for his fellow senators presidential prospects in racially charged terms. as reported in the new book "game change" reid privately said the nation is ready for a black president, especially one as, quote, light-skinned as obama who speaks, quote, with no negro dialect unless he wanted to have one. soon after his quotes became public, reid issued a statement saying i sincerely apologize for offending any and all americans, especially african-americans for my improper comments. already behind in recent polls at home in nevada as he fights to win re-election to the senate later this year, reid has worked closely with the president to guide the administration's agenda through congress, with health care reform still in

it will allow nevada to be energy independent in two and a half or three years, but just as important mr. president, we also will be able to produce far more electricity than nevada needs because now with this power line that will create hundreds and hundreds of jobs, we'll also have a lot of -- renewable energy projects for that full 250-mile route. they will be able to do solar, wind, and geothermal and bring that on the power line. that's only the first phase. after that it's already been agreed by wapa they can do stage two which will bring electricity from the northwest into nevada and, of course, california and the whole southwest. so that's a -- that's a good project and an example of the good-paying clean energy jobs that can never be outsourced. we will tackle our daunting energy and climate challenges by doing so we'll strengthen our national security. we need to look no further than boone pickens who talks about this every day of his life, that the way we're going to have a more secure nation is lessen our dependence on foreign oil. use the resources we have among which are

the poll showed that among nevada voters, 30% view him favorably, 50% view him unfavorably.w you have this controversy where he makes racial remarks even though the president has for -- forgiven him and civil rights rally around him. >> thursday the president told the nation that the system did fail and how is this admission played and are those measures being called on now going to be enough? >> we don't know. it's a bureaucratic solution to a bureaucratic problem. you didn't get the dramatic call to fire somebody. maybe that was a good decision or maybe it wasn't. in the end there is only one way to now whether or not the system is working and that's whether there is another attack or not. but national security has always been a vulnerability. generally voters think on issues like the economy and social issues, they think the democrats handle them better. national security thinks republicans do. and to the degree there is any perception this party is weak on protecting the country, that's a problem for the democrats. >> and i know you'll be discussing those topics on show
