and we have the editor of the nevada independent, a new site breaking stories across nevada. today we are taking a look at innovative nonprofit models of local journalism and will discuss the opportunities and challenges of supplying and financing these ventures. a reminder to our audience, you can tweet questions to us this morning. first, i want to start with john fortin. you founded the american journalism project. you had a goal of raising $1 billion annually for this bencher. -- for this venture. i read that you've raised about $42 million so far in six months. can you give us an update on what that process has been like? >> it has been exhilarating, terrifying, just about any adjective you can think of depending on the day. , the americany journalism project is based on , thatinterlocking beliefs democracy and journalism are interdependent, that at the local level, journalism is a public good, that the market left to its own devices won't supply adequately, and the third is that that market failure is not something that our commerce for government is going to solve. so

it was created to do an inrun around the science and was created intentionally to disregard nevada at the expense of other states. in 1982 the nuclear waste policy directed doe to study many sites and ultimately to construct two repositories. it limited the amount of the waste the western repository would keep to ensure that the western location would not be the sole facility. by 1990, a second site was to be named amongst a short list of five other locations. however the list of sites drew intense opposition and in 1986 the reagan administration announced a halt to work on a second repository. congress passed the amendments in 1987 which not only canceled the second repository program, it nullified the creation of a storage facility that was supposed to be placed in tennessee until after licensing of the final repository and it designated yucca mountain as the site. mr. secretary, this is historical context is key and it shows that influence was used to scapegoat the state of nevada. all i'm asking for some reasonable people to come to the table, to address this issue and recognize t

he was arrested in douglas county, nevada. we're joined live at the oakland police department with more on his arrest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. frank. the oakland police department and san francisco police department were both on the hunt for stefon jefferson and was arrested late last night and led officers on a pursuit to nevada. the douglas county sheriff's office said he shot at an injured sergeant during the chase before crashing his car and was arrested. the sergeant was expected to be okay. jefferson was wanted in connection to two homicide. the first shooting happened friday at 10:15:00 a.m. on market street in oakland. the oakland police department says they found a man dead after being shot multiple times and the second shooting was in san francisco's district at 1:30 p.m. and that victim also died. there was a third fatal shooting at first and it happened just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon and police have yet to say if he's connected to that shooting as well. >>> oakland police are gearing up to cr
