it was unique to nevada. had e 1980's we egalization of tribal casinos, casinos in mining towns and suddenly it wasn't so unique and started to play out on the landscape of reno's downtown. what happened now in the couple of decades when we had all that gaming ion for the industry is that reno has started to diversify, not only a loturism where there is of focus on outdoor recreation, ut also a diverse if i indication of the economy -- diverse if i indication of the be able to establish businesses here, including small businesses. cities tour is in reno, nevada to highlight its history. next we hear about the importance that mining played in development. >> nevada is one of the few the first e nglo-american -- it started with the founding of virginia 1860.n reno was found in 1868. a railroad hub and we connected with virginia city truckee he virginia railroad. being the ew up as last stop before the desert and he last stop before the mountains and the main rail hub through on was sent its way to san francisco

by 1967, howard hughes came into the state of nevada and one of the effects of him in the state of nevadaas that it legitimized gaming operations. by 1974, harrah's had gone public on the stock exchange. that heralded the new era of gaming throughout nevada and eventually throughout the united states. what we have here are things from our educational collection which allows people to look at things, physically handle them. the purpose is to gather, protect, and present the history of gaming. this allows us to give demonstrations of various types in this instance of things that are considered to be special work for cheating devices. i take a magnet here, i have a cube. it is a magnetic dice. they can also work in the opposite direction. this is a magnetized lead ball. it will stick to the magnet. dice cube unprocessed out of the 20's. this cube is interesting because it has not been spotted yet but you can see there is a mechanical device in the cube itself. by tapping the device solidly against a table, it will shift the center part to one side of the cube to make it special. tap it again

nevada has to teach mining. unr is the land-grant university here in nevada. unr was founded in 1874 in elko, and the elko experiment was considered a bit of a failure. nobody graduated in 10 years. so they moved the university to reno in 1885, and the first building was completed in 1886. the first class graduated in 1891. and mining education at unr in that time was a lot of starts and stops, was not very consistent. there would be a few semesters during which no mining classes were offered. and in those days, unr, in those days it was called the university of nevada, was just a few buildings on the south end of what was then the evans alfalfa ranch. as the university moved north, they bought more of the alfalfa ranch. in 1907 several politicians in nevada thought it would be a good idea to honor john mackey by having a statue of him on the grounds of the capital building. so they approached john mackey's heir, clarence mackey, about funding the statue. clarence mackey agreed and reached out to the artist, who

nevada had seven grounds for divorce. they included adultery, but also things like cruelty and desertion. it offered more possibilities for people to come. it only took six months, which was unbelievably short. caseirst really celebrated happened in 1905 with a woman named laura cory. first, she denied that she was there for a divorce. she was a very wealthy socialite. peoplef other wealthy began to come here for divorce as well. they came to reno because it was the largest city in the state. it was on the railroad. divorce was an incredible economic because people had time a place to stay. they needed to go out and eat. economically, divorce was incredibly lucrative. legislators started to try to pursue a larger redus -- residency period. they were successful in 1927. they reduced the length of time from six months to three months. it was the fastest divorce that happened anywhere. enormous amount of people coming from all over the country. it was a who's who. roosevelts,lts, the the rockefellers, a lot of celebrity actr

in rural nevada, you might not be able to woo any businesses. so the strength of us was recognizing, what are our strengths? do we have a stable tribal government? the banks want to know how stable you are. are you changing a chairman every year. so if you have stable tribal leadership, a stable tribal council. experience, and some new people who can learn from the people that are on there. so tribal government that is stable is another strength. what would our weaknesses be? well, there's weaknesses of legislation that could change. for example, with taxes, there was talk in nevada, where we sell tangible products like tobacco, automobiles. if the state of nevada goes to a different tax, something dealing with non-tangible products, coming up with different taxation schemes. said,, we will lower the sales tax from 7% to 5%. we would lose a couple million dollars if they did that, and tried to institute a service tax or something like that. that's why we don't do insurance companies. if we brought in insurance companies they would not be any tax
