what about the sanders support in nevada? is it solid for the presumptive democratic nominee, joe biden? jon: interesting question. sanders won here essentially in a landslide over joe biden. it is a caucus. they calculate the votes differently. but it is interesting the biden team took that as a second-place finish after his disastrous showing in iowa and new hampshire, spring boarding to south carolina, and the rest is history. the progressive wing of the democratic party is not much different than the left wing of the democratic party elsewhere. i think the imperative to beat donald trump will trump, so to speak, their potential disaffection with joe biden, their disappointment in bernie sanders not being the nominee. that of course is going to be the key provided across the country, -- the key for biden across the country, being able to do what hillary clinton was unable to do, get the far-left excited to turn out for him. steve: how important is the -- free democrats in nevada? jon: i think all of that calculus has chang

what would that mean for nevada? really good question, because catherine cortez masto and jacky rosen were just elected in the last cycle, so they are not really high in seniority in the minority party right now. but if the democrats were to take the senate, catherine cortez masto, as head of the democratic senatorial campaign committee, would get credit for that understanding would rise in the senate. rosen would only be in the second part of her first term, so she probably wouldn't have much influence, but catherine cortez masto moves up the ranks, and that will help jacky rosen and nevada as well. for many years, a small state like nevada really couldn't do much, until harry reid became one of the most powerful people in the history of the state, becoming minority and then majority leader of the u.s. senate. and i am sure he has talked to catherine cortez masto about that, because he anointed her to replace him. steve: is nevada a swing state? jon: great question, steve. i wrote a column after the last election, s

we're 60 days away from resuming evictions in nevada. in my state and across the country, the wave of evictions we have been holding off for months is going to come crashing down if we do not act now. nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the entire country. in may, it was over 25%. as high as the national rate during the worst of the great depression. and on top of that, some nevadans haven't yet received their unemployment benefits or their pandemic unemployment benefits. across the country, almost half of workers earning under $40,000 a year have lost income. some people just don't have the ability to fully pay for their rent or mortgage, particularly when we're asking them to shelter in place. the thing is, in nevada, we were already in the midst of a housing crisis. even before this pandemic hit us. almost half of nevadans are renters. that's 45%. and of those renters, half are cost burdened in some way, meaning that they pay more than 30% of their income in rent. now, the silver state has the biggest shortage in the country o
