when sandy hit new york city. cnn crew on the scene is reporting to us a strong smell of methane gas. a utility pole spontaneously burst into flames earlier this morning. officials are now assessing whether the gas levels there are excessively high in this neighborhood, and that could force those fire crews to evacuate. right now, 6.6 million people still without electricity across 15 states, and washington, d.c. nearly 2 million of them are here in new york where flooded subways has transportation at a virtual standstill. not to mention all the property damage and destruction, including those 80 homes that were consumed by that fire in queens. recovery from superstorm sandy could be as mayor michael bloomberg is calling it, a massive, a mammoth job. meteorologist rob marciano is in chelsea, new york, this morning with the latest on the damage there. rob, good morning. >> good morning, soledad. well, some of the damage behind me, one of a few buildings that were ripped off. nobody hurt miraculously. lower manhatta

new york city has a new tourist attraction thanks to superstorm sandy.ive construction crane partially collapsed during the storm 750 feet in the air. >> it's still dangling above midtown manhattan. police have evacuated the entire city block underneath because of the safety risk. john miller is watching it for us. >> reporter: good morning. city officials were watching it too. not like they didn't see the potential for an accident like this coming, so just before sandy hit they issued a mandatory stop work order on all construction sites in the city and they did surprise inspections including one of this site on friday. now this construction site since it started has had 110 complaints. 21 of those this year alone. seven of those involving the crane. the last one a violation resulted in a stop work order that was corrected by the general contractor. those were all fixed and the crane itself was inspected friday. that was just three days before the boom snapped. when the crane folded the winds were up to 90 to 100 miles per hour. so what was a tower cran

look new new york and new jerse. one of the many bridges shut down tonight.all of the local bridges are shut down. new york city virtually isolated. we have a new death to report. the city of new york reports a 30-year-old man has been crushed to death after a downed tree crashed into his apartment in flushing in the new york city burrow of queens. there is an urgent call as well coming out of a firehouse in brooklyn, new york. firehouse evacuation of engine 206, which is on grand street off the newton creek requesting not trucks or cars but boats to evacuate the men inside engine 206. the water has risen so quickly. it's a live look at the fdr drive now on the main highway on the east side of manhattan. it is under water south of 20th street all the way around lower manhattan. the storm surge is lower manhattan has reached. the fear was the storm surge would top the previous record of 11.2 feet. instead it's now at 13 feet officially from the national weather service. and arrested cog to the national weather service that is enough to inundate lower manhattan

we do have breaking news out of new jersey. a levee breaks in northern, new jersey, flooding three towns with three to four feet of water. this is the town of moonachie. right now they're in rescue mode and have no fatalities to report yet. angie goff, news 4. >>> mayor vincent gray will drive around the city with the coast guard to assess the damage in the city. he's likely to see a lot of downed trees. news 4's megan mcgrath around the city. what are you seeing? >> we a >> reporter: we are seeing a lot of downed trees like this one behind me. this one still on cathedral avenue, but a ways up from the other tree we showed thu morning. this is a very large, mature tree snapped at the base in the wind last night. it came shattered when it hit the ground. fortunately, for these homeowners, it actually fell parallel to the houses across the front yards. we're not really seeing any damage at all. just a lot of debris. it's a big mess here. we also have a whole line of cars. amazingly, none of them apair to be damaged. i thought we

heading into tonight's third and final presidential debate, our new nbc news "wall street journal" poll shows election night could be a cliff hang we are the candidates now dead heaven. chuck todd breaks down the numbers. >> reporter: the new nbc news "wall street journal" poll shows the candidates in a 47-47 tie among likely voters. in mid september, the president led 50-45. the numbers show an etchly divided country overall. the president's job approval holding steady at 49%. economic approval down at 46%. foreign policy approval at 49%. the poll also shows a clear enthusiasm gap. the president has a 49-44 lead among all registered voters, but that 47-47 tie among likelies, it means republicans are more enthusiastic and more likely to vote. the biggest red flag for obama, 62% say they want major changes if he's re-elected. romney's biggest red flag, by 44-43, he is still personally viewed more negatively than positively. >> that was nbc's chuck todd reporting there. after a violent weekend in the middle east, tonight's third and final presidential debate poppic of foreign policy is mo

this week a grand jury handed down new indictments against him that include seven new charges. among them, committing an act of terror while armed, and attempted murder. two men involved in a high-speed chase that killed a prince george's county officer have been indicted. officer adrian morris died in august when he lost control of his police cruiser and crashed as he was casing two suspects in a stolen car. the suspects are charged with felony theft. neal also faces murder vehicle -- motor vehicle manslaughter. the prince george's county jury found adrian johnson guilty on all charges for a crash that happened in february of last year in brandywine. johnson was beating with a blood alcohol level over three times the legal limit when he crashed into a car. laurens barnard jr. was killed and his passenger seriously injured -- lawrence garner jr.. >> their 18-year-old son lost his life in a completely avoidable incident. >> he was my last child at, my baby. >> johnson will be sentenced in december and faces 13 years in prison. >> 4:49. new york city mayor michael bloomberg holdi

widespread damage across new york and new jersey.dest hit areas, we haven't heard from rick leventhal yet this morning. and he joins us live. rick, last night gigantic roars coming in to point pleasant. how are things this morning as the sun comes up? >> swamped this beach communities. we were getting pounded in our hotel, the white sands, thank them very much for their hospitality 'cause they kept the place open and gave us lamps and rode out the storm with us. there's a lot of sand on philadelphia area. you can see some of the localized flooding there. some streets still under water near point pleasant. take a look at ocean avenue. down this way, mike. ocean avenue was part of the ocean. there is a couple of feet of sand in spots. it's an absolute mess. suv, heavy trucks could get through, but certainly vehicles would have a really tough time. there is a lot of debris on the road. swing around this way, mike. pieces of dock, pieces of houses. you see the parking meters here that are a couple feet deep in sand? some of these houses
