apple makes its first big announcement with its new c.e.o. tim cook. he took the stage today and introduced the new iphone. we're live to let you know what all the excitement is about. >> reporter: this just wrapped up about 15 minutes ago. this is apple headquarters in cupertino. a large group of people were at this announcement are now filing out of the building. a lot of apple fans expected to hear about an iphone 5 today. the new product launched is the iphone 4f. it has a lot of the features that were rumored to be in the iphone 5, eight megapixle, high quality video, the exterior design is just like the current iphone 4. >> inside it's all new. how is it different? first, there's a new chip inside. the a5 chip we launched this year in the ipad 2 now making its way into the iphone video. >> reporter: along the -- along with the faster pros or, it will have eight hours of talk time, better antenna, better voice command system and will have that hd quality 1080 video. outside the apple store in walnut creek apple fans gave us their reaction. >> the i

introduction of the newest iphone had been much anticipated partly because for the first time apple's new c.e.o. tim cook took the place of steve jobs. >> this is my first product launch since being named c.e.o., i'm sure you didn't know that. >> reporter: one surprise, it's not the expected iphone 5 but the 4s. it's faster with a better camera and one feature that sets it apart says the vice president, voice recognition. >> for decades technologists have teased with us this dream that you're going to be able to talk to technology and it will do things for us. >> reporter: in apple's demonstration, the phone actually understood conversational questions. >> do i need a raincoat today? >> it sure looks like rain today. those are topics apple's new c.e.o., tim cook, will talk about tomorrow when he discusses the company's latest quarterly earnings with analysts. we get a preview now with thestreet.com's technology reporter, james rogers. >> susie: so james, as i said, earnings come out after the bell tomorrow. whether or not are you hearing, it's going to be another another strong quarter. >> yeah, no one is expecting apple to post a loss tomorrow. this is a company which traditionally puts out stellar quarterly results and we're expecting to see the same again. apple was at the end of an iphone cycle during the fourth quarter. but we're still expecting to see good iphone numbers. the same for the ipad. the mac book air. apple has seen really good growth in emerging markets like china. so we expect to see cook focus on those issues tomorrow. >> susie: so this is the first time that tim cook will be speaking to analysts as the official c.e.o. since steve jobs passed away. what do you think is going to be his message to the wall street community? >> well, i mean, wall street is looking for certain things

still, the announcement was notable because it was the first for new apple c.e.o., tim cook. it's also apple's first phone update in more than a year. the iphone 4s will range in price from $199 to $399. it's the first iphone that will be available for sprint nextel, in addition to the verizon and at&t networks. suzanne pratt reports. >> reporter: meet the iphone 4s. yes, it's faster. and yes, it's got a better camera. but it doesn't appear much different than the iphone 4. so, will people buy it? >> unless it's such a drastic change, i'm not going to be getting the new iphone. i can wait. i'll wait a bit. absolutely. >> the generation that i'm on is a little older. so always looking for new products out there to help with the information. >> reporter: it's attitudes like that that have helped apple sell 55 million iphones in the last nine months. no matter what the new phone looks like, there will probably be long lines at stores like this one when the iphone 4s goes on sale october 14. that's good news for shareholders, because iphones are apple's most profitable product, a
