we call the richmond district the new chinatown in the 1980's at that time. just being around the tremendous unique neighborhood, and discovering san francisco in the 1980's as i grew up, but i also have been very active as a community organizer. i worked in chinatown, and some first jobs also at the mental health center in the richmond area multi services in the 1980's, and i was also a staff are at the chinatown youth center -- i was also a staffer. a lot of my work has been supporting community empowerment, especially in an immigrant and people of color communities. most recently, i have been teaching at san francisco state. i ran the immigrant rights coalition in the city in the 1990's for several years. i'm also an immigration attorney, and a lot of my passion is supporting in power met for immigrant communities in the city as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? supervisor mar: a lot of people bring this up, but is one of the most exciting, culturally diverse places in the world. learning about new cultures and people from different par

chinatown. this is my 35th year. i am here to voice my support for the building of a new hospital. i was born in san francisco at chinese hospital. this is 16 years after it opened, on jackson street. this was 1925 when a hospital was built. i grew up in chinatown and went to one of the good public schools, a couple of blocks from the hospital. i went to francisco junior high school. after medical school in new orleans, i chose to come back to san francisco and the chinese hospitals to practice. that was 35 years ago. i am here to voice my support for the building of this due structure. why do we support this new structure and the new chinese hospital. it is so important to the community and to san francisco. it is critical for the health and well-being of so many people. first, this is a safety net hospital. for many asian patients, chinese patients, and all people of san francisco. the hospital service the mauling will, low income, disadvantaged, and elderly patients. this service the most vulnerable people. secondly, it has culturally confident and sensitive health care, providin

new route. in addition to 7, which we will do all over the city, we are going to add chinatown and north beach to our city streets -- to our sunday streets. that is going to be wonderful. it is one i have been trying to oversee as city administrator, working with our liveable streets and our chinatown chamber of commerce, our chinatown merchants association -- they are all very excited, and we will be looking at the way we have been using grant avenue, all the way through north beach, from california, across broadway, so we will have more details about that, but we do not have a date announced for that. we are working out the details, and we will listen carefully to all of the needs and concerns of our merchants along the area, residents, to make sure it is successful. the nice part of sunday streets -- it is not just the physical closing of the streets. it is really the way we work with all elements of our community to make sure we bring out things that are great for kids, for families, and the merchants will have an opportunity to read prioritize the way they welcome their traditional visitors

news. you all are invited to join us at 4:045 in the morning. sunday, and there will be a pretty exciting event in chinatownhis has a very special place in my heart. i was the chair of the task force for the board of supervisors since its inception. i think we have come a long way. that is one more way that we will be able to really push that prepared this message down to the community level. i hope it has become a model for other neighborhoods. the lifeline's council that is happening this week, the bay area earthquake alliance meeting coming up. in other updates, most of you know laura phillips that has been the general manager since 2008, she announced that she is retiring. today is her last day on the job. i know everyone wishes her well under her leadership. we had made great strides in regional preparedness. we will continue to do that. all of the counties surrounding us to insure them that that spirit of cooperation will continue and we are invested with working closely together. i will be sitting over in her office until we can figure out the next general manager. finally, lots of things are in the

north beach, chinatown, mission district, and many other towns, so it is not new. the coalition i am working in this predominantly based in the richmond district, and i have been able to be here with a number of small-business owners but also the two main merchant associations that are in support of the merchants associations, as well. the ordinance that to have before you is item number nine. it would help to support the small businesses along this greater court or, and it is impacting these businesses, like jane pet stores like pepco, -- ptetco, -- petco, and there are those along lombard street and also california street, and the board of supervisors allowed with a divided vote the conditional use permit for a pet food express last year. i know that that was a contentious issue that divided a number of communities and especially the small-business owners, the pet store owners. this is narrowly tailored to impact supply stores in that area. on january 20, petco had a meeting that i attended, and for my reid, we were near unanimously opposed to date -- the petco o

north beach and chinatown will probably continue to be high need neighborhoods even after this project. we focused on the current users and the desires expressed by the park users for new facilities. the people that were gathered behind as earlier in the meeting were talking about the poorly sited playground and a desire to keep the hard scape, because that is where children learn to use their bikes and where they play tennis. we came up with a plan that expands and optimizes the playground, the tennis, and the visual connection between the facilities. since may of 2008, the library and recreation and parks department have had out representations' and discussions with community groups and other stakeholders throughout the neighborhood, including chinatown community development corporation, telegraph hill neighborhood center, and many others. the open space in this plan is increased by 20% and allowed to accommodate an expanded children's play area, to meet new ada and safety features, and to include expanded seating throughout the park. there is really no green space. there is really no where to sit down. that is something the new plan provides. the new mason street pl

chinatown. it really influenced me. we had a restaurant at the time, and at the time, we were always worried, watching the news, to see whether or not the restaurant would be looted, whether or not it would go up in fire. that was something that was a big concern and worry for my family at the time. i remember thinking even at that age how important it was to consider what the economics were in communities, whether people had or felt that they had opportunities or did not have opportunities, and what role it was that government played in those outcomes. that is what really put me on the path to public policy. so i pursued public policy both at occidental college, where i went to school as an undergrad, and also you see-berkeley where i pursued public policy -- also you see -- also uc-berkeley. that was really what shape my interest in public policy. >> where you place yourself on the local political spectrum? the left or right? supervisor chu: i know a lot of folks want to put a person in the position where they call you left, progressive, moderate, whatever category that might be, and i think it really depends on the issue.
