french authorities now say that co-pilot deliberately crashed the plane killing all on board. in a news lufthansa germanwings parent company confirmed the co-pilot is andreas lubitz who began his training in 2008 and trained for a short time in arizona. there was an interruption in his training for several months but no reason was given for that gap. earlier today french prosecutors said the cockpit voice recorder revealed lubitz intentionally put the plane into a descent leading to the crash. according to that tape the pilot knocked on the cockpit door to get back in after leaving out but there was no response. even when the pilot began pounding on the door. the prosecutor says lubitz did not outary single word as the plane went down but passenger screams could be heard in the final seconds before impact. >> this was voluntary. this was deliberate. refused to open the cabin door. in order to let the pilot back in. i'll repeat. he refused to let the pilot back in, so he is the one who pressed the button that allowed the plane to begin descending and lose altitu

everyone on that plane should not be forgotten ever. >> greg, you were outside that co-pilot's home earlier today learning new details. what can you tell us? >> reporter: absolutely harris. this is the hometown of the germanwings co-pilot andreas lubitz. this place was shocked by the publication by a german newspaper purported to be the transcript of the last minute of the crash of the flight right before the crash. fox news has tried to confirm this with the french authorities that it's a real thing. they would not comment. the german newspaper has come up with a lot of valuable information in the last couple of days. the name of the newspaper -- it includes kind of a timeline of what happening and flushing out a lot of details. first that lubitz basically encouraged the captain to take that bathroom break in the early minutes of the flight right before the forced descent. and then as lubitz is locked inside the cabin and starts the plane's descent we hear the captain screaming for god's sake open up the door and then we hear him using an ax to try to open it up. we also probably the worst part from the very

we're continuing to cover breaking news from germany where we learn today new information, the co-pilot andrea lubitz was hiding a secret illness. investigators who searched his apartment and family home recovered two torn up sick notes from doctors including one from the day of the crash which was never submitted to germanwings. this as recovery efforts continue of course in france with families of the victims have gathered. they were asked to give dna samples to help identify remains remains, joining me by phone is katy tur and nbc's claudio joins us from the french alps. >> reporter: we don't know exactly much about what the illness is only to say they found evidence of an illness. now, german media is reporting a mental illness, nbc news not able to confirm that. we also know the prosecutor's office during the search of the family home and apartment in dusseldorf found doctor's notes that come with a carbon copy and original copy. they found both of those copies which means the carbon copy was never submitted to the employer. you get these two copies and one goes to the employer and
