. >> reporter: the storm is expected to continue its march into new england on thursday, bringing more than a foot of snow to upstate new york. kurt gregory, nbc news. >> and now nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer is tracking the storm for us this morning. dylan, any relief in sight? >> we are going to get relief from the severe weather. no more tornadoes in the forecast, but we are still looking at that heavy snow now pushing across northern new england, upstate new york, northern vermont and eventually moving into the maine area as well. but you can see from boston back into hartford, right down into new york city, it's all rain at this point. we did have a line of heavy thunderstorms move through new york city last night, producing torrential downpours and very gusty winds, but look at some of the snowfall totals so far. there are so many areas from new york through pennsylvania back into ohio that have already picked up a foot or more of snow. in connecticut, we picked up about six inches of snow before it did change over to rain, which it's going to stay as all rain at this point, but

we are going to see the chance of more snow falling across northern portions of new england, as this continue continues to move off to the north and the east. we are looking at an additional several inches, especially upstate new york, into vermont, into new hampshire as well but it has now transitioned over to rain to southern new england. and we are going to see this area of low pressure continue to move up through the north and east through the day. so the worst of the wind is over. we're pretty much done with the most severe thunder storms that we've seen out of this system. we do still have winter storm warnings up across the northeast, where again an additional 6 to 12 inches of snow is possible. and across the higher elevations, in upstate new york, we could also see more than a foot of snow. that's a look at the weather across the country. now here's a peek out your window. >> and in baltimore, maryland today, 40 degrees. it is going to be a windy day but the winds will michigan 42. miami, and texas to top out at 58. >> that's your latest forecast. it's finally going to get be

we also have snow falling all across new england right now, heaviest in upstate new york. we still have the wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain back through the hartford area, and that is going to be an issue for anyone traveling early this morning. we also though have to keep an eye out for these storms where we do have a severe thunderstorm watch posted and eventually we will see severe storm warnings get issued i'd say all across louisiana. all of those flooshz of light, that's the cloud to ground lightning we're seeing. so very strong storms back through louisiana and up into northeastern texas, as well. then you go a little further north. we're talking about snow. we have winter weather warnings and advisories and watches, basically from texas all the way up into northern new england. we are slowly going to see this thing start to the spread eastward. however, for the gulf coast area, we're going to see the biggest threat for tornadoes. even the shading of yellow from eastern texas all the way into western south carolina, we have the potential of very strong storms

forecast to blow through much of the midwest and a winter storm watch has been issued for parts of new england. at least three deaths are being blamed on yesterday's storms. a series of twisters from the deep south blew off roofs and knocked down power lines. icy roads caused a 21-vehicle pile-up in oklahoma, and more than 500 flights were canceled nationwide. edward lawrence is in washington. edward, good morning. >> reporter: these were vicious, fast-moving storms that ripped across the south. in addition to the deaths, the work crews in the south are working to restore the power in at least five states because of the tornadoes and the blizzard conditions in the midwest. >> reporter: a christmas day tornado tore three mobile, alabama. >> there it is. >> joe michael love pulled out his cell phone to record the twister while miles away it destroyed a church and homes and his son's high school. >> the van is almost destroyed. the fieldhouse is gone. just all the portable buildings for classrooms are gone. >> reporter: here in houston, texas, the tornado destroyed some buildings and tore down po

pennsylvania to new england could get up to a foot and a half of snow. jeff berardelli has the details. >>> our big east coast storm will continue throughout the day today but gradually winding down as we go into the afternoon and evening. things have been improving from south to north throughout the day, but the coastal areas are still receiving very heavy rain but the emphasis for snow will be further inland especially upstate new york and northern interior new england and eventually maine is going to be getting in on the act as well. that's where the winter storm warnings are in effect. and a notice they are not in effect along the i-95 corridor. again, that's where we're expecting it to mostly be in the form of rain like it has been throughout most of the day. additional snow as we go through the next 24 hours. you could see 12 inches or more where some of those areas are in purple, but, again, along the coast, we're talking 1 inch or less and this time around, again, it looks like it's mainly going to be just rain. i'm david bernard for cbs news, mi
