when you think about how do people sound in colonial new england? a board mayflower and the first few ships that would follow, there were upwards of 17 different dialect regions represented in plymouth. and they lived in an age of recordings. very rarely, unless you are in a big city did you hear anybody speak english in any way other than your own dialect or accent. so imagine what it's like to be a board a ship that -- with the people trying to figure out, what she saying to me? because, as moderates, we are accustomed to watching that television to, news to have newscasters accent. we're accustomed to hearing people speaking differently than ourselves. wasn't always the case back in the 16 hundreds. and so, their vocabulary words, their grandma practices, people sometimes might have been looking at each other thinking, white? -y >> the mayflower was originally supposed to leave england in july of 16 20 with another vessel, speedwell. and when they got out to sea and proved that speedwell was very lucky, it had to turn around for england twice. an

and quickly took over new england. in one year, plymouth colony goes from being the only english settlement in the region to being a backwater, as what's known as the great migration brought in thousands into the boston area. they quickly spread not only through massachusetts, maine, and new hampshire, but also to connecticut. it was the puritans that were really the motivators behind the pequot war. plymouth colony, their soldiers did not arrive in time to be part of the conflict. that may have been intended. and yet i see that conflict, sort of peek the being a conflict that would radically change the balance of power particularly among the native groups of the region and would anticipate in many troubling ways what would happen next because the scale of what happened in the pequot war was very different. hundreds of pequot men, women, and children would die, be massacred at a fort in what's now mystic, connecticut. and this brought a level of violence and brutality that was not a part of native warfare prior to this

she arrives in new england in the middle of may. much to the distress of the merchants, she returns utterly empty with nothing to compensate them for the investment they've made. i can't even what the first winter was like. 102 passengers arrive in november, and by the end of february, half of them are gone. and we know from the writings of william bradford and edward wip slow that there were times in february when two and three a day were dying. their houses were incomplete. so imagine simple little houses that are clapboarded on the outside, and for some insulation, there's two or three inches of clay that are standing within a lathe, but people are watching that just wash away. so imagine the sickness, the death and houses literally melting in the winter weather. they set their seed in february because february comes beautifully like an english february. they didn't know it would be followed by a brutal new england march. the native people come to them late in march, and this is the first time they've seen each other. they've mot

, all the ways you can put together freedom and god began with the pilgrims and the puritans in new englandis thing totally new. and so of course you get also all these paintings, right, that celebrate them. we looked at these paintings before. what we saw, this sort of religious dimension. that the light -- the heavenly light shaning on the mayflower -- shining on the mayfloor compact or the civil liberty where it's with each other, the pact, the idea of self-government in the mayflower. or the noble and heroic and yet domestic and agricultural sense of origins. and of course these other sort of famous, the landing of the fathers, the fathers, our fathers are the beginnings of our people. and of course all the way up through 1914, the first thanksgiving and images of a kind of peaceful settlement, right, to be contrasted with others. you also get these pilgrims society. what the new england society and pilgrims societies do, basically we talked about if civic rights are one way to build a national identity, civic rights can also be one way to spread a regional identity. so you get new engl

bradford's history begins with religious problems in england, where a new ruler james i became king injames was also the supreme head of the church of england, the official church. but some people objected to the expensive robes and rituals of the church of england. they withdrew from it and were called separatists. the story of their religious persecution in england, how they became pilgrims, and how they eventually found religious freedom was all recorded by william bradford. >> many therefore the lord's free people join themselves into a church estate. ♪♪ they were various towns and villages. after they had continued together for about a year and kept their meetings every sabbath, exercising the worship of god among themselves, they saw they could no longer continue. so the resolve to get over into holland, which was in 1607 and 1608. >> the separatists would leave england to find freedom of religion in holland. >> to leave their native country, their lands and all their friends and familiar acquaintances was much. an adventure almost desperate. >> about 125 separatists from england

the tolerance of quakers in new england is not ordered, what the king orders that all quakers be returned to england to stand trial. and so the bulk of persecution of the quakers is taken away from england and removed -- taken away from new england and removed back to england itself because king charles despised the quakers. he saw them as one of the forces that rose up in fighting his father, in the execution of his father and that's where quaker pacifism comes from. that the only way to save the faith was for george fox to make a statement of pacifism that wakers would never take up arms again. it was the only way for them to maintain. four quakers die in new england, all of them die at the hands of mass bay colony, but what will happen within the year 1661 to 1662, hundreds and hundreds of them will die in english prisons because they would not do what i asked you to do at the start of the morning, they would not take an oath because quakers believed that every word that came out of your mouth should be a word of truth and, therefore, an oath was not required to prove that your speech

the first english child born in new england. this cradle passed down through the winslow family and may have been used by penelope. this is the vast collection of archaeological artifacts from the winslow site. these are in the collections of plymouth plantation, which is now -- it's recently changed its name to plymouth patuxet to acknowledge the long native influence in the area -- or long native history. so we have these items in the archaeology that kind of round out the information that we get from the surviving possessions and the portraits. so kind of connecting penelope to fashion and the ability she may have had as a needle woman. we have this fine bone needle case, which actually still -- found by archaeologists still containing pins. we have scissors here. and, of course, these items date from the time of penelope's residence at the house. we can't be 100% sure they were hers. some of them very likely were. then this strange item in the middle speaks to her wearing of high status clothing because it's called a goth ri

he never returns to new england. he dies on his while he's on his military mission. he dies at sea while he's on this military mission on behalf of cromwell and so in 1665 josiah inherits the bulk of the estate at some point he built the house for himself and penelope, which is located nearby. so originally this the first archaeological excavation down at the site was done in 1940 by henry hornblower who went on to phone plymouth plantation. and we can look at this plan. that was done by later archaeologists and we see that the house has a typical layout for the time except. it's much larger. it's a grander home, but it has this hall that was common in the 17th century just it's a bigger room where daily life took place and then we also have the parlor. it's more formal room where not only entertaining is done, but also business is conducted. so at this time we don't have the form the distinction between formal. i'm sorry the formalistic student between public and private that we do now houses were public sites men. we're conducting businesses from their home. and so

he was born in 1854 the new england glass company, which was the precursor to the lily glass company started in 1818, edward drummond libby's father william langdon libbey became the agent for the new england last company in 1872, and so he learned the glass business from his father and in 1883 his father suddenly passed away unexpectedly, and he took over the business in 1888. he brought the libbe glass company here to toledo because number one there was a natural gas in nearby finley. there was high silicose sand available, which is a donut of making glass plus the businessman of toledo sweetened the pot a little bit and gave him the site for the factory as well as sites for tom has workers to build houses once they are here in toledo it. kind of faltered a bit the workers were unhappy because they didn't have their extended family around and it was not a highly developed area. so all the amenities that they were used to in the boston area. we're not available in toledo. and so he lost a bunch of workers. so he went down to west virginia to recruit more workers and not only did he

most of these left boston to settle in northern central and western new england, where it names like belfast, dublin and londonderry in new hampshire reflect the origins of their founders. one who remained with his congregants was the reverend john way hand who go to church -- moyhand who built a church where the event that explained the street name changing to federal street took place. i am sure many of you know where it federal street is in a boston. another development that came at this time in 1737 was the foundation of the charitable irish society of boston by a group of 26 immigrants who wanted to make sure their friends and family arriving would be taken care of and they engaged in philanthropic work to help them get settled if they fell on hard times to help them out. that society is still in existence and continues to do work in helping immigrants arrived to this very day. here we have an artistic representation of the front just peace of the constitution when the society was incorporated in the early part of the 19th century. in the 1730's, small but regular immigration of
