as a great resident of the state of new hampshire. i wanted to ask you, in the meeting that we had in my office, one of the issues we talked about was your responsibility for the southern border. as a commander of northcom. is this idea of the tunnels. in fact, this morning, as i'm looking at the news, we discovered that there are reports that u.s. authorities discovered a half-mile tunnel under the border with mexico into san diego, used to smuggle drugs. and as we think about this heroin and also fentanyl issue, which a very synthetic drug that's really killing people in new hampshire, i got an amendment in that focuses on cooperation with the israelis because they have the tunnel issue with hamas and hezbollah. and admiral gortney had said that was a very helpful, cooperative effort. i would like to ask you, as you go to the southern border, will you look at this tunnel issue too and how we can develop better technologies to ensure we are looking at not only how they're transporting the heroin and fentanyl over in traditional ways,

it's not like most of the mosquitoes that we see in new hampshire which are active at night. this is a mosquito who is also active during the day. so we need to be taking action now. i listened to the head of the state lab in new hampshire talking about the challenge of getting results from the lab for people who had been tested for zika, and he said, you know, sometimes because we have to send out the labs that we don't have the capacity in new hampshire to do the analysis that's required, we're still looking for a test that can definitively determine if somebody has had zika in the past. he said something as small as the ability to ferry the samples and the results back and forth to a lab is one of the things that we need so we can get answers so we know how to act. the folks who are trying to get information out to the public talked about the need to have support so that they could get information out both to the medical community and to individuals about the importance of what individuals need to do to take action. and they said very directly to me, as i said, you know, i

a report on employment in new hampshire. and at that time women were only making 59 cents for every dollar a man earned. and the conclusion of that report was that this has an impact not just on women but it's an impact on of course their whole family. it's something that their children, that their husbands, that their entire family is affected by. and if we can close this pay gap for women, it helps not only the women who make up two-thirds of minimum wage workers but it helps their families. it helps pull their kids out of poverty. we need to do more at the federal level. and that's why i strongly support the paycheck fairness act because this legislation would empower women to negotiate for equal pay. it would it would close loopholes that courts created and the laws that are already in place and it would create strong in m incents for employers to obey these laws. this legislation is about basic fairness. it's about equal treatment. it's about creating a level playing field in the workplace for our daughters and ash gran
