warren: hello, new hampshire democrats. it feels so good to be back in new hampshire.ted to be here tonight largely to say thank you. i would get into politics, not in a million years. ,ut when i got into this fight i quickly learned that nobody does it alone. so i wanted to start by taking a few minutes to say thank you to some of the hardest working democrats in the country. you are terrific -- you're too -- -- are terrific senators you're terrific centers could not do this without you. is there to amend that i have had the honor of traveling with across this great nation -- state, fighting shoulder to shoulder to make change, they are truly remarkable women and we are blessed to have them in the senate so thank you. i also want to say to my friends , it is so good to be with you today and so good to be in washington with both of you. you make a big difference. and i want to acknowledge tonight's distinguished honorees, recipients of the for all of your courage and commitment. so i am also excited to be here tonight with fighters like the leader of the new hampshire

i live in warner, new hampshire. i am recently retired from the staff of the afl-cio, which is the federation of unions. since my retirement, i have been working with the campaign for a family-friendly economy to help pass family and medical leave from new hampshire, and i m really passionate about this issue, both because i have had family and medical leave, but also because i have not had it. when my son was born, i did not have it. it was 26 years ago. more recently, i had a good fortune to have a union contract and that provided for paid family medical leave and i was able to be with my mother when she died, which was an incredible gift. and it would have been more than stressful to have to try and balance work and taking care of a parent like that. so i am really excited that senator brown is joining us tonight. he is a leader on issues of importance to working families. he spent his time in the u.s. senate relentlessly advocating for us and i am so happy he could be here. so welcome, again. sen. brown: thank yo

susan: joining us from new hampshire, ray buckley, who has been the chair of the new hampshire democratic party since 2007. he's also one of the vice chairs of the democratic national committee. nice to see you again. i can't believe it's time for new hampshire politics. chairman buckley: we are very excited. susan: let me introduce the two reporters who will be asking questions for the next half-hour. zach montellaro is with politico and making his first appearance with us. josh kraushaar is with the national journal. he is the politics editor returning to our set today. and josh, you are up for some questions. josh: welcome to the show. i want to ask you about a new gallup poll showing more democrats have a favorable position towards socialism than capitalism. as you know, over the last month, you have seen prominent democrat supporters embraced the green new deal, medicare for all plan that would create single-payer health insurance. could you be a capitalist and win the democratic primary in new hampshire or iowa caucuses? susan: ray buckley first. chairman buckley: the quick answer i

and welcome to new hampshire. we know that you are a leader when it comes to alzheimer's disease and we are so appreciative for your support, an excellent and bipartisan effort. for us, if you have a brain, you can be affected by this disease. we have 24,000 individuals currently withals i'mer's and couple thousand more with brain disorders. 76 caregivers and giving million of free care per year. as chris alluded to, the work force issue here in new hampshire for direct care staff is extremely tough. it also leads to the issue of staff that is trained properly to care tore individuals with specific needs which our disease process is specific needs. we are competing for people to come to work. and when you have that sort of situation happening, it gets families without a lot of options. other than the care for their loved ones themselves. and we as an organization realize that being out of the paid family leave fight, which is rick louis for us, it was taking it to the other end of the spectrum and moms and adoptio

new hampshire like a lot of other states where the state department provide services in new hampshire to enter into a public-private partnership and 9 other organizations like us to cover the state. serve about 1000 people, 1000 families, annual budget of $30 million across the state. the system supports 12,000, most of the support the people we work with, most of the people we work with, we call them our clients, continue to live at home. the primary caregiver for those individuals, we supplement support for making, getting funding so they can hire people to come in and help them in the community. if one of those people is unable to come to work and takes the stress off the family, most of the people we work with are struggling themselves. two income earners. if the staff that is supposed to take care of the disability isn't able to show up, mom or dad has to stay home and if you are an hourly employee that means you will lose pay. that is an immediate issue if it lasts for a day, becomes a much longer issue that goes on for a longer period of time. you combine that with the fact tha

it could have happened in new hampshire because of the sophistication of new hampshire voters slar to the sophistication of ohio voters. this story came from barack obama. i called the president about a month ago and talked to him about the thoughts on candidacy, and he told me some interesting things. here's o one story. his success was launched in iowa. that's where he did very well in 2008 in the caucuses and not so well here but he's flying back to iowa for his first visit a month after he was president in this nice, big airplane. and he had with him the victory of agriculture tom villsack who had been the governor of iowa. so they were flying into iowa first trip back his press secretary was robert gibbs, and gibbs turns to the president, and he says tell the victory of agriculture in iowa that day after the whole day of campaigning that day. obama said i just put in a day, 8 or 9 stops all over eastern iowa, i was dead-tired, and done. and my young staff person pulls out a cell phone, and says senator obama you need to make five more calls. he said i'm done, i'm tired, and i am

welcome back to new hampshire i'm matt mayberry. i'm affairs veteran. a% of our population is made up of verpts. within the last hour a veteran has committed suicide. one every hour. what are your the thoughts on and the virtual and how we treat veterans. >> thank you very much for that question. you know, i represented and grew up in a city that has the official moniker of military city usa. if there is some of y'all in the affairs. you may have gone to lackland air force base to get training. i hope you weren't there in july or august. because it's very hot. you know, i think that in this 21st century we have to be smarter about our military engagements. we saw 15 years ago what kind of mistake the iraq war was. obviously our troops who went and fought over there did a noble job. however, i believe that we need to work to avoid conflict as much as possible and that we need to invest in the personnel, the people of the military as much as we sometimes seem to invest in the hardware of the military. that means investing [ applause ] -- investing in the

[laughter] sen. klobuchar: i have come here many times to help candidates, there is a democratic dinner i will never forget. i memorized all of these things about new hampshire that will be forever ingrained. my favorite line is you are the home of presidents, as an franklin pierce and jeff bartlett. i plan on competing in new hampshire. i plan on doing very well in new hampshire. [cheering] that is my intention. and i'm going to work toward it. so i am here to listen as much as, not even more than i intend to talk but ail share with you a few thoughts that i have and then we'll open it up for a conversation and take questions. but, so, we announced this campaign just a little over three weeks ago in my hometown f oakland, california. and -- people have been asking me why are you running? i'll tell you. a number of reasons. one, i love our country. i love our country. and i know what we are capable of. i know who we are, what we believe in, the values, the principles upon which we were founded and i am prepared to fight for those. i also believe that we are looking at an america today where american values and the american dream are under attack and we have got to stand to defend those dreams and ideals and values. i also believe that it is time to restore opportunity for all americans in this country, not just a few, not just the top 1%, not just the big corpo

prevention and abuse in the administration there were some strides were made about what we see in new hampshire is there is still a tremendous challenge and i believe this new numbers out that show the crisis is subsiding a little bit and i look forward to learning how washington can be a strong partner to combat these questions. is there anything today about what means he might look to for reinstating the tax to pay for the affordable housing >> we are going to have to look at a number of ways starting with closing any loopholes that exist for wealthy individuals and corporations and i also believe that we are going to need to look at bringing down the cost. if we are going to get there it's going to be reforming the tax system and also reforming the way we do healthcare reducing the cost of it. as i said today if you are close to something you should put forth a plan to the american people can evaluate it. >> tuition free college you are going to pay for those by bringing down the cost of health care you have to reform the tax code to pay their fair share so the wealthy corporations meet thei

iowa first and then new hampshire.nk you're seeing candidates like booker and harris and others trying to really establish themselves early in these states. they want to try to make up for maybe ground that if biden were to jump in, he could, you know, become the front-runner in these states like new hampshire and iowa. so they have to be strategic about where they're playing. we could see castro try to play heavily because that's a state that's really wide open and he could have a breakout moment there. it's all about trying to find their lane and making a name for themselves, especially before maybe other candidates like sanders and biden jump in who have greater name recognition. >> it's a great point. we jump around. they're actually laying out at least early what their thought process is with these stops or how many of thestones they make or what states they're going to and why does new hampshire matter? i think we get into this debate every four years. but take a look at the last ten democratic primary winners an

we're in new hampshire. we can almost see canada from our porch, and other safe countries, and stop the practice where pharma pays off generics to keep their products off the market. this shouldn't be happening. >> if i could just jump in, which is more to her question which was about medicare for all, what's your reservation about supporting medicare for all? >> i think it's something we can look to for the future, but i want to get action. i think the best way we do that is something that we actually wanted to do back when we were looking at the affordable care act and we were stopped, was trying to get a public option in there. and that is a way, if you all remember that debate, that is a way to provide a public alternative that's real, even beyond the exchanges, so that we can bring down the rates. and then we can look at other options, but we have to start somewhere. and i think we can do that much more immediately. >> so medicare for all? >> it could be a possibility in the future. i'm just looking at

what a pleasure it always is to be back in new hampshire. since i was a little kid, i've had a happy relationship with the waters and woods of new hampshire, enjoying my visits to enter, only one on earth, as you know. and then center sandwich and now guilt some. and i've had my share of political memories from this state, as well. i was president of nashua for the famous reagan-bush debate in 1980. i campaigned with bush 41 in the 1992, and actually man to the microphone on primary night for him. and i enjoyed traveling the state with governor drudge greg, a close colleague and friend, when he campaigned successfully for the senate here. but it's not so much my fond memories of new hampshire that bring me here today. i'm here actually because i think our country is in grave peril, and i cannot sit any longer, quietly on the sidelines. we have a president who openly praises and encourages despotic and authoritarian leaders abroad while going out of his way, seemingly, to insult and even humiliate our democratic allies. the question presents

what do voters in new hampshire right now care most about?ys have new polling. >> yes, we did some polling last week and surprisingly there were some big things that showed up in the polling. 84% of democrats here in new hampshire believe that the president will not win reelection. so when you asked them the second question that follows which is what do you care about in a candidate? what they care about is someone who agrees with their issues much more than say someone that is capable of defeating donald trump. so i'm not sure if the democrats here are sort of underestimating donald trump again. that can be a possibility. that kind of a question weighs in on how they are figuring their choices for president. >> that's so interesting because that is counter to what cnn's polling just a few weeks ago found. it found that what democratic voters are most interested in, you can see it surprised us a bit. it wasn't things like the new deal. it was 49% there, the candidate that has sort of the good chance to beat the president. do you get a sense t

new hampshire is thinking about it. one thing i would say, make sure you identify before you legalize how you will use your money so it is not a food fight. new revenues let's put it toward , early childhood education or potholes or whatever. in colorado we have tried to make sure all the money stays and gets focused on the consequences of drug addiction. >> this is the health care question. let's say there's medicare for all. three things you would do first given the political reality in d.c. to address pricing and health care? >> access. i am a believer of community health centers. a friend of mine started one in connecticut in 1972 and got me to take money i had saved and we bought his building so he could renovate it and expand the health center which now has 220 locations in connecticut. community health centers are the single most cost-effective way to make sure we in real time can get to a point where everyone has medical. we are 95% covered in colorado. how do we get the last 5%? we could have a sliding scale. ov

i don't need to tell new hampshire that.nd this is an issue that is not only about just infrastructure and disrepair. it's about the quality of people's lives in the productivity. it is literally -- this is a remote leaders, which if you want to be successful you have to concern yourself with the details. some will call them the mundane details of what is involved in any issue. when you have roads in bridges were people half the time lanes or shut down because of potholes are so deep, or the person who was working and commuting and in the car for two hours, their car keeps breaking down because the tires keep the fleeting, this is a -- deflating. it is not efficient in the way it's been constructed and they are not at a family meal. these are part of the costs of a failure to invest in infrastructure. then let's talk about one of the biggest benefits for an investment, which is jobs. those are jobs. to build up our infrastructure. those are jobs. to build up our infrastructure, those are good jobs. so when i look at somethin
