since south carolina unlike iowa and new hampshire has a very diverse electorate, that state is going to be a very critical early test for democrats. joining me now "washington post" opinion writer and msnbc contributor. heidi who is nbc news national political correspondent and steve kornacki at the big board. steve, this isn't just any lead. this is a huge lead in south carolina. so what's going on for joe biden? >> very interesting numbers in this poll. we talk so much about iowa and new hampshire. south carolina, the first test for democrats where african-american voters play a major role. overall, more than a 30-point lead in south carolina for biden over sanders. we can say that bounce we have seen for biden we have seen it in new hampshire, very much a factor in south carolina. we mention that question of african-american voters, of race in south carolina. check this out. when you look at white voters in the democratic primary -- in the most recent primary about a third, 35% of the electorate was white. pete buttigieg in second place among white voters on the democratic side in

bernie sanders is a next door neighbor in new hampshire and he won the new hampshire primary in 2016 with 61% of the vote. now, though, biden starts out 18 points ahead of sanders. also note elizabeth warren, another neighbor in new hampshire, massachusetts, boston media market spills over into southern new hampshire, massachusetts democratic candidates usually have won the new hampshire primary, think of kerry, dukakis but here's warren in single digits. for biden, that's a good place to be starting here. one thing we're also seeing in this poll is something we've seen nationally, a formidable difference when you start looking at age. age of the respondents. so check this out. 18 to 49-year-olds, joe biden actually isn't even in first place in new hampshire. bernie sanders is. 27% to 20% over biden. now let's go to the next group, 50 to 64 years old and everything starts to change. look at that, biden leaps almost doubles up, sanders off a little bit there and then go to the oldest group here, 65-plus and holy smokes, 53% to 9%, biden leads. this is the thing. more than half of the

he didn't make it to new hampshire. this has to be gratifying for joe.llot in new hampshire and got like 638 votes. hillary won the state with 112,000. bernie, who ran the last time in new hampshire got 60% of the vote. he's down to 18. but the most important number in the poll, kristen will agree with this, is the date. we're a long, long, long way from that primary. so it's interesting to look at, but it's still anybody's race right now. >> and nia, senator warren on the cover of "time" magazine this week. "i have a plan for that" is the cover. you heard jessica mention the dozen proposals that warren has put out this election cycle inspect the cnn latest national poll, warren is nearly even with mayor pete buttigieg who has been criticized for talking more about values instead of going into any sort of policy detail. is there an exchange here? a risk for buttigieg to not follow warren's lead on policy? >> you know, we'll see. so far it's worked for him. i think his issue is he basically does well with about 30% of the democratic electorate. 30%, colle

back to new hampshire for a second. back to from just this week. the poll. issues. top issues from the poll coming out. and at the top of the poll was, 41% came to health care. look at, reproductive issues. i think it's up. 5%. 5% for the issues of reproductive rights. we're in an age here, susan, the #metoo, timesup. not resonating, though, looks like in the 2020 election when it comes to reproductive rights. >> right. especially look at the 2016 race and spoke to women under 30, they didn't consider that even an issue, because it's something they had all of their lives. that was a big thing. but the other -- i think the way the democrats, to frame this, will probably be if these cases make it through the supreme court is that judges matter and bring us the kavanaugh confirmation hearing and use that as the tool, even though it is somewhat disconnected. that's where the democrats need to say, we need to have control of the supreme court, because of this and other things, and put it that way. the laws you mentioned that are up in alabama and georgia also have anothe

joining me now, andy smith, director of the university of new hampshire survey center.ou on. you know your state's politics here. the president seems to be worried about joe biden because he's talking about him all the time, right? is that fear well placed in terms of the kind of challenge biden would put against trump? >> i think it's relatively well placed. i think it's really early now to see who the actual nominee is going to be, but biden has more money or as much money as other candidates. he has more name recognition, and he's currently kind of the flavor of the month right now with media coverage. so i think it's probably a smart thing for trump to try to pre-emptively knock biden down a bit and brings up some of the things in his past which other democrats so far have been hesitant to do. >> it's interesting because democrats, you know, he's got a long record. this is the trouble of running for office when you have a long legislative effort because there are legislative decisions that folks don't like, and you have already seen that. for instance, elizabeth war
