it's not just the candidates pitching to new hampshire, this new hampshire pitching to the democratico validate this space that they occupy. >> mark, on the republican side, we've got this mass exodus from the house. to what do you attribute these house retirements? yes, they're in the minority. just they conceding that the house is not going to turn democratic? >> it's all about being in the minority. it's not fun. being a united states senator in the minority is a lot better. your vote doesn't matter. one of the most powerless politicians in america is a house member in the minority. so we are seeing a lot of defections from this. to me, the significance of all this, the more defections and particularly in competitive districts makes it so much harder for republicans to take back the house in 2020. we end up seeing yet a few more in particularly from swing districts, it's going to make a tough climb for republicans to win back the house. >> newt gingrich and the resurgence of the republican party for decades democrats had been in charge and republicans had felt this way for a long t

i'm from durham, new hampshire, not too far from here. i have really deep roots in new hampshire. my dad is from dover, my mom is from manchester, from the west side specifically. my grandfather taught at unh. my mom is a teacher in farmington. i loved growing up here. i couldn't have picked a better place for myself to grow up. i kind of want to talk about growing up a little bit with you guys today. growing up can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. for myself and my generation, it included learning things like our planet is dying. i was in middle school when i first learned about climate change. i learned all about pollution and i learned all about greenhouse gases and recycling and everything. i was 12 specifically when i learned we were hurdling towards a turning point after which our planet was permanently damaged. in high school, i learned all about history. i learned about the way history shaped society, the way it continues to shape society. i learned that people born into different circumstances than myself, whether it's race or class, ability or anything

new hampshire knows how to elect some really strong women.laughter] so, you know, listen, i think we all know, this is a very particular moment in time. not to mention the fact that while we are all here working to talk about what we are going to do to fight for the america we believe in, the current president of the united states is golfing. so, just do that split screen. new hampshire obviously crucial to get that going. >> right and when voters in new hampshire are much more progressive than voters in a lot of the other states we saw bernie creamed hillary in 2016 in new hampshire, i think it's interesting though that biden is still ahead because the vote is kind of split between bernie and now we have elizabeth warren in the race whose also very progressive, but just because voters are very progressive here we need to remember if the democrats want to defeat donald trump and i'm getting the vibe that they do they are going to want to focus a little bit on the general as well as just the individual state by state, because primary voters are more progressive, overall and then in new hampshire particularly so. neil: new hampshire plays off whose ever close to that market and it would be elizabeth warren , bernie sanders, in vermont, elizabeth warren of course from massachusetts, normally, it's the massachusetts rep who has the edge, john kennedy had it in 1960, john kerry had it in 2004. i'm wondering whether that might have played elizabeth warren now

he was in new hampshire not long ago, and he lectured the voters of new hampshire at his rally there, have to choice. you have to vote for me. on the other hand, this is the same president whose state party earlier in the year tried to abolish the new hampshire primary, the first in the nation primary that gives new hampshire about 25% of its clout in our country because every four years people have to go to new hampshire. and new hampshire understood that. and that motion basically failed for wont of a second. but what a stupid idea. and it comes from i think the president's paranoia, insecurity, if you will. he wants anything but a contest, anything but a choice. >> you obviously are facing an uphill battle here. you have got now some company, though. you've got former congressman joe walsh running and former congressman mark sanford considering getting in the race. >> right. >> realistically, given all of the built-in institutional support that the president enjoys, every extra challenger that you have to deal with, doesn't that just dilute the send a message to trump vote? >> oh,

in new hampshire right now.what do these numbers end up looking like if biden takes a big hit in iowa and someone else is suddenly surging? and if biden lost iowa and new hampshire, he'd be 0 for 2 in the lead-off contest. and yes, theoretically, he could recover in next states. but you know how these things go. it only takes a couple of wins or a couple of losses to change everything. voters in nevada and south carolina and everywhere else take their cues from what happens in new hampshire and iowa. they flock to the winners. they avoid the losers. that's why in the modern era of presidential politics, no one in either party has lost contested races in both iowa and new hampshire and still gone on to win the nomination. i say contested because the one exception is 1992, bill clinton technically lost iowa and new hampshire and won the nomination, but iowa was not a contested state that year. so i think the biden campaign is right. he does not have to win iowa, but if he loses it, he'd better turn things around r
