launching new air strikes in iraq aimed at keeping a vital piece of infrastructure from falling into the hands of isis. welcome to "america's news headquarters." i'm arthel neville. well, these new strikes are targeting isis terrorists around the haditha dam, where a breach could potentially unleash deadly floodwaters in the direction of baghdad. now, this as president obama prepares to address the nation wednesday when he's expected to lay out a long-term strategy for wiping the terror group off the map. dominic in tallie is live in the newsroom. what can you tell us about the latest strikes? >> well, this is the first time that the united states has expanded its operation in terms of targeting isis, now moving into anbar province, which is in the west of iraq. it is also a historic hotbed of islamic support and also islamic -- sorry, extremist activity. so, what we're seeing is attacks around the haditha dam, which is iraq's second biggest dam. it is quite pivotal. it's up river from baghdad on the ufradz. the fear is it could flood baghdad, even though that's 100 miles down river.

the news first came from the mouth of iraq's new prime minister who told journalists gathered outside of the u.n. about his apparent intelligence on this "imminent attack." the u.s. is scrambling all departments, white house, new york police department, saying they have seen the reports by the prime minister but they cannot confirm if there's any truth to it. seemingly pushing back on legitimacy of his claims. a lot of back and forth about this. the u.s. really downplaying this. what's the latest? >> you know, it's very confusing situation. certainly i have talked to a dozen people this afternoon and they know of no such plot or such information that's come from the iraqis so as you might imagine they are scrambling to try to figure out what the prime minister was talking about. it's a casual conversation he seemed to have with reporters on the sidelines there at the u.n. and he mentioned that there was information that his government had that there were perhaps a plot in iraq by americans and perhaps frenchmen to attack the subways in paris and the united states. now, we have reached
