msnbc's cory coffman is joining us from teaneck, new jersey. city reported nearly 4,000 new cases in the last 24 hours, the state of new jersey. >> reporter: hey, kendis. good morning to you. the hospital at teaneck has about 50 hospitalized patients. they tell us this is the highest number since the peak of the second wave which was around summer. several months since we saw these numbers. in addition, all five of these states -- four of the five except for new york have seen all three of the variants, and all five of the states have seen the uk variant which the epidemiologists are saying is partly to blame for the latest numbers. they believe it's causing the latest surge, especially in these five states which account for 44% of the cases, but only 22% of the population. new jersey's governor phil murphy sat down with lester holt this week, and he has a different theory on what's causing the surge, at least here in his state. listen in. >> there have been states that have largely thrown away, lifted all their restrictions and are doing bette

cori coffin is in rockaway, new jersey, with more on this.ew jersey has expanded its vaccine eligibility for residents 16 years and older. how urgent is this effort to get younger folks vaccinated? >> yasmin, good afternoon. it's becoming more and more urgent here in new jersey and in many other states that we're seeing. for example, michigan, where you've been reporting on these cases of younger and younger people getting the virus. what we're seeing is that that is largely due, according to health officials across the nation, in part because they haven't had access to the vaccine up until now. so that's going to be a big push in the next coming weeks and months moving forward. according to the cdc, only 0.4% of 16 and 17-year-olds in this country are fully vaccinated right now. that number is going to have to drastically jump up to start to bring those cases down when it comes to children catching it and young adults. there are many different programs that are now being introduced. for example, this mass vaccination site here in new jersey

holiday surges crippled its response plan california's coronavirus plan appearsen to easing and new jerseyonce again in the thick of the battle. it is one of five states accounting for roughly 44% of the new cases over the past week. joining me cori coffin in new jersey and scott cohen in california. cori on the east coast first, frightening numbers emerging out of new jersey. you would expect with some of the restrictions in place, for so long in new jersey with what's happening with vaccines, we wouldn't be seeing these, but now an uptick in covid cases in that state. what's going on? >> there's so many factors at play and that health leaders are trying to follow. 4,000 cases a day in new jersey up to 7,000 in new york and michigan, two states also part of that list including pennsylvania and florida. all five states make up 22% of the population. so to have 44% of the cases many leaders are asking what is happening. one thing epidemiologists believe is that it's the fast moving uk variant is spreading quicker in the denser communities than they can get the vaccination out and then also
