the new high list is more diverse than the new lows. at the moment i want to talk about the stocks in the new high list, the winners, so to speak. none of them are what you would call cheap and most took a breather today. and the stocks that made new lows managed to rally. i thought today was a counter trend day. i believe the trends will reassert themselves. the propellants are too mired in the market. we'll dreesz the opportunities in the new low list later. i see eight groups with no high activity. the food and beverage co motor has the most participants in the high list. meanwhile this group has is most m & a activity like we saw last week. now the strength of the food and beverage names suggest that our economy is much weaker than the employment numbers indicate and if the fed tightens too aggressively we could be in a lot of trouble economically. i believe this theme has been the predominant major cord in the market. mcdonald's hormel, dr. pepper, mccormack, brown formen and costlation brands should be bought into weakness and let

the financial crisis but just to illustrate how a bottom might work why don't we zoom in on this new lowk to june of 2008 through june of 2009. i don't want the anlage. this is not systemic risk to us but sure enough it points out that the highest number of new 52 week lows remain in september of 2008. we saw fewer and fewer 52-week lows in the stocks. then the averages snap back like crazy. when you look at the chart during that period the process of bottoming really did take months. months. not just like hey, that's over. four huge legs down. one in september, one in october, one in november and then one in march and by the time we made the final generational low several groups were making higher lows. the energy stocks and all the high yielders that i told you to buy at the time. this is nowhere near as bad as 2008 but it's making the point that just because we saw the huge cascade of selling doesn't mean the pain is over. it's quite likely the averages could have another nasty down leg and that would fit into our thesis on the show even as some sectors hang in there much better than

we had 60 new lows. if you bought them on the dips you were afly mated. we had whole sectors that proved illusory. coal, i get that. the coal companies are in the crosshairs of the president and the epa. no way you can beat that. that combination. then coal spilled over to copper and iron and the makers of the commodities are on the ropes. who knows when or even if they can bounce from that bruising if you bought the dips in those you watch the stocks go lower still and then the commodity contagion spread to oil and gas and including the pipeline companies. when oil initially collapsed, and traded down to $43 not once but twice, lots of people bought the dips in the oil stocks and they were rewarded beyond their wildest dreams. oil bounced up to 60. stocks went soaring. it was breathtaking. including the most beaten up of names in the company's least prepared for the decline. here we are, back to 43. but the oil stocks are so far below the last time that crude was at the levels that they have become some of the most dangerous stocks out there. it started
