and hurricane season for new orleans and louisiana come once a year. we know. june first-november one. we know that earthquake season is everyday. you never know. i don't want you to have blinders on to think this is not a part of reality right now. because it can happen. so, begin to organize today. this is just an example of a meeting flyer that we had in broadmoore post katrina, galvanizing our residents having festivals to get our people engaged and involved. some of the other things that you can do today is start developing repopulation strategies. in a disaster how will you find your people and determine what their needs and bear yers are? these are things you can have in place right now. but for broadmoore we had to do this in the aftermath. i can't stress to you enough to make sure that you incorporate your vision and your strategies. block captains aided us in our recovery. block captains are people living on blocks who stepped up to say, i will be the eyes and ears of my area. i will walk and see who's back and who's not and their intensions. our bloc

was not affected but the 20 percent aided new orleans in it's recovery. people were able to come back sooner. they could live on land that was not inundated with water. regardless if the disaster hits you you still have the responsibility. much is given and much is required. that's a part of the resiliency you will not only see in yourself or the neighbors that live adjacent from you or in a neighboring community not far from you. get involved and do your part in your recovery and do your part today to make it all worth it. and strengthen your neighborhood associations now. know your neighbors now. and understand that we are not just homes we are people. so thank you for your time and thank you for having me. and i really appreciate being here with you today. thank you. because i heard alarming things about the new orleans neighborhoods that in neighborhoods in new orleans in which there was not the history of conversations or history of shared projects and activism. the decision about the future of the neighborhoods whether they would exist or not is being made by the federal government and many of the neighborhoods will be park lands. that's the opposite extreme of what you want to have happen in san francisco. san francisco is about neighborhoods but some neighborhoods are better than another. community challenge grants are a fun way to stimulate these conversations. i want to point out a few great people in the room that you don't already know. give you examples of further examples of what things are possible. so mark and canoli are here they run the neighborhood assembly's network and specialize in large group conversations. which is sort of a basic building block to think about if you you don't know where to start with these things. may be you have the space in your neighborhood that's crying out for a project but you don't know what you should do

air force one landed on the tarmac in the new orleans airport. he came down the steps and, clearly, this was not going to be a usual interaction. usually when the president gets off air force one, you briefly talk to him at the foot of the steps, and then you leave to get to the meeting. as soon as he got off the steps, as soon as he came down the plane, he actually grabbed my arm and pulled me aside. now, they had clearly tipped off some washington reporters. this was clearly -- they had told the reporters, watch, the president's going to be angry, he's going to be mad at the governor. this was clearly a press stunt because they had told some reporters in washington to watch this, and i could see that he was angry. and i thought, well, maybe he's angry at bp. maybe he's angry at the oil. maybe he's angry about the bureaucracy and the red tape. and i was stunned. he was angry because of a routine bureaucratic letter we had sent the day before about food stamps. and he says to me, careful, governor, this is going to get bad for all of us. same tim

the screening was a red carpet recovery walk saluting all the courageous members of the greater new orleans baton rouge recovery communities. the event was held at the old u.s. mint, a louisiana state museum. dawn farm hosted their 37th anniversary jamboree in ypsilanti, michigan. the event featured activities for all ages, including live music, hayrides, pony rides, live and silent auctions, and tours of the 74-acre farm. the jamboree provided an opportunity to have a great time while raising awareness of the tremendous power of recovery. recovery schools and friends in st. paul, minnesota, held a kickball tournament with live music and fun for everyone! the event was held at como park where attendees enjoyed a nice day outdoors playing kickball and were able to celebrate recovery together with games, music, speakers, and information booths. the partnership for a healthy durham held a block party for the entire durham, north carolina, community at durham central park. this free event included food, diverse entertainment, games, and activities for all ages. information was also provided abo
