and we heard the mayor of new orleans say the president of the united states will be coming to new orleansorrow to support the city and its victims. the mayor says that the visit will be an extension of a coming together in prayer for the city still in mourning after this new year's truck attack, killing 14 people. the mayor also said she has requested to the white house to provide a tactical expert this week to help harden the city. ahead of that city, hosting the super bowl, as well as mardi gras activities as it pertains to law enforcement. we heard a lot coming from representatives of the fbi and the atf saying they still believe that the suspect, shamsud-din jabbar, acted alone and that he did use his vehicle to ram victims there on bourbon street. but prior to that, the atf and the fbi say they have meticulous detail and evidence as to all the events or some of the events that preceded that revealing in detail that they collected. now, inside five days from that new orleans attack, the fbi revealing that the suspect is shown on video, planning an even more expansive attack, potential

back here in new orleans.he fbi has named the suspect in attack as 42-year-old shamsud-din jabbar, u.s. citizen served 13 years in the army and army reserves. investigators don't believe he acted on his own. in part because of surveillance video that they have showing three men and one woman placing what appears to be improvised explosive devices in parts of the french quarter. we want to warn you this next video is hard to watch. it shows the moment jabbar drove a white rental truck on to bourbon street 3:00 this morning. pull in fronts of a police car off the road and drove up into the sidewalk right into a crowd of people and take off downtown road plowing through the crowds that were out celebrating the new year. this next video from about abalcony overlooking bourbon street give you a sense of horrific scene the moments after this attack with mangelled bodies scattered across the road. the death toll right now stands at 15 people but that number could go up given that more than 30 others were injured. som

we are learning more about the chief suspect in this morning's deadly attack in new orleans. 42 and an american citizen, born and raised in texas. three senior defense officials tell nbc news he served active duty in the army from 2006 to 2015 and a deployment to afghanistan and in the army reserve when he received an honorable discharge. officials say jabbar plowed his pickup truck into crowds about 3:15 this morning swerving around a police car that was put there to block precisely that type of attack. he killed at least ten and injured 35 more and died during a shootout with police. the officials say they are still investigating jabbar's motives and believe he was not acting alone. john brennan, the first thought that i had covering attacks like these over the span of more than a decade from small cells that were sort of operationally part of isis, and sort of lone wolf inspired attacks like the one on the west side highway in new york and in other places. it has been a while when the caliphate was at its peak and isis was producing propaganda and inspiring folks to kind of

let's return to the situation in new orleans. e man suspected of carrying out an attack on new years revellers has been identified as 42—year—old shamsud dinjabbar, a us army veteran from texas. a flag of the group calling itself the islamic state group was found in the pickup truck which the suspect drove into a crowd of people — the fbi has confirmed the suspect was shot dead at the scene after exchanging fire with law enforcement. in these images shared by earthcam, you can see a group of police officers running toward the scene. the mayor of new orleans latoya cantrell gave this update about what's happening in the city. first and foremost, i want to express my deepest condolences to the families of the ones that were impacted by this tragedy on bourbon street, near the heart of the city of new orleans, and i know the entire city council grieves right along with me. no doubt about that. and our families. my priority will continue to be to ensure that victims that remain on bourbon street now will be serviced and moved as soon

it is the same company in the same type of rental that occurred in both the new orleans incident and the incident in las vegas. that is the common evidentiary tie between the two. outside of that, no law enforcement officials told myself or my colleagues here at nbc news that there is any sort of evidentiary tie between the two other than of course they both took place on the same day, so that is the only evidentiary link between them. whether or not there is other information that has come up, we have been told so far preliminary -- preliminarily, they don't see a tie at this point, but obviously these investigations are ongoing. the video that was played at the press conference shows the idea of these fireworks set up is kind of like mortise. we heard earlier in the broadcast, the actual sound of the fireworks going off, no different than you would hear on the fourth of july, and that there was gasoline and fuel that was included in this. the fact that it incurred -- occurred in the bed that is open and exposed on that truck allowed the explosion not to be contained and that is some
